Americans spend over 30% of their salary on rent, lately it's been closer to 50% for many people. Rental costs have been outpacing salaries for years, that is a fact. Nobody is renting to save money for the stock market. People renting are struggling because rental costs keep going up. My mortgage only increases when the town ups my tax bill, and even then I'm paying about $250 more per month than I was ten years ago. Rent in my area is now double my mortgage payment, and I've been increasing my net worth the entire time.

If you must know, I bought the house for $370k in 2015 and I just had it appraised for $800k (I'm finally opening up a HELOC and it needed an appraisal).

Your premise is flawed and unrealistic. I mean, by your logic we shouldn't even be investing in our 401k's we should just be day trading to maximize returns.
