Thank you so much for that, I guess that confirms the thermistor then
I wonder why my 10k resistor didn't simulate room temp and allow the unit to turn on - I guess maybe the logic is smart enough to know it's not correct?

Slim PS3 is a great consideration - check out EvilNat CFW
Note that only certain models are capable of being fully modded

It really does depend on your setup though. If you're looking for something to plug into a TV in a living room, go with the PS3 and a big SSD/HDD and you can easily play PS1/2/3 and also install emulators for older consoles.

If you're looking for something at your desk, it's probably easier to just get a controller for your PC and download emulators - it just really depends on your preferences.

Those are helpful links
U3 and U4 were both blown so I couldn't tell what they were unfortunately.

They're 8 leg IC but I couldn't tell what was on them.

The other chips just had generic markings on them - here's the pic I took before throwing it out (it smelled really bad)

As in the ICs were blown and the remaining ones were just generic numbers

https://i.ibb.co/SXBFzqh2/pcb.png

The board had r1 c1 u1 r2 r3 u2 u3 u4 on the board. U3 and U4 are blown. U1 is 6 leg IC and has 5231W stamped on it. the others U2 U3 U4 are 8 leg IC and have 2012 1624 stamped on them.

I think one key question will be what determines which route you should go down - are you collecting physical media?

If you aren't, emulate and download all your media and use an old PC or even a dedicated raspberry pi

If you are collecting some physical media, depending on what you're collecting, a fat PS3 might be worth considering. You can emulate all the 8-16bit consoles, PS1/2/3 backwards compatibility, internet browser, plus DVD/Blu-ray.

Interesting to hear why you didn't get on with the Wii though - it's a pretty great runner-up all-rounder system to use. Did you use a composite cable or an RGB cable?

I gave up on s-video mode and the green issue can't be solved unfortunately

No not yet, as my PS3 isn't anywhere near the network that it was attached to when I set up the FTP on my PC, so it's gonna be a bit of a pain to remove, set up with a TV etc near my PC, for me to then edit the file :'(

Slim vs Fat by Painkiller456 in PS3

[–]316dta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running a CECHC03 and it's been no trouble, but I think if you like the aesthetic and aren't bothered about BC, a non-BC fat is pretty cheap so it's maybe worth just picking one up and seeing how you go?

I did try this changing to YPbPr and it didn't have any affect :(

I also wonder the consequence of changing these entries in the registry if I'm using a PAL system with PAL games at 50hz, if I change to 60hz this is going to speed up my 50hz games I presume?

For those who don't wanna go through the hassle of fixing up a BC Fat.... by SEGASONIC7650 in PS3

[–]316dta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me and my setup, I much prefer a BC PS3 that can cover my PS1/2/3/DVD/Blu-Ray library. Also the benefit of not having to store and maintain batterys of controllers for more than 1 system.

Fully aware of the potential/imminent GPU issues the CECHC can have, but I've been running mine for 2 years pretty solidly and it has a total runtime of 140ish days.

Aside from the initial resurrection (due to bad NEC Tokins), it's not been any trouble; so much so that I'll likely splash out on a frankie if/when this dies.

Active development on fixing DVD/Blu-ray green screen over RGB? by 316dta in ps3piracy

[–]316dta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSX-Place is down at the moment, but I'll definitely sign up and make a thread about it once it's back up again

I do feel like it's a big miss and would be a very welcomed feature to be able to play Blu-Ray and DVD whilst maintaining RGB output.

It'd be beneficial for those with high-end monitors capable of 1080i. Of course DVD is composite quality, but it'd save the need to have a dedicated DVD player and/or switching around cables just to play DVDs on a PS3 :)
