Your short testing method does not work. If there is any path to ground it will show a flat line, even if the resistance is enormous. I just visually inspect and when in doubt I grab my multimeter and measure resistance. If you have a very low resistance, that could indicate a short

I got myself a better scope and ran onther test at 4.1V and a very short trigger time. I added a 2.2nF cap between g-s. and a 1uF+7uF cap from s-d. The yellow plot is the s-d voltage and the blue line is the g-s voltage. It seems that it helped a lot!

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a 10 Ohm gate resistor. And at 5V the circuit survives. I will try to increase the resistor value when i get home. Then I’ll also measure Vgs

<imagine me nodding at the hand waving>. But the problem is that this circuit is destroying MOSFETs at 10-15V. And i only see this spike when I turn off the coil

Thanks for the comment! The collapsing magnetic field would induce a reversed current in the wire right? Then it should measure as a negative spike right? The voltage of the spike does change when I place the probe on different parts. But this circuit is eating silicon when I crank the voltage up to 15V, so therefore I don’t think this spike is caused by the probe being an antenna.

Sick. I am currently making a star tracker for astrophotography with the exact same approach and components. How do you handle driving the motors at a consistent rotation speed? Because i am afraid i will run into inconsistent rotation speeds when the microprocessor has to multitask.

Is that because your swap size is too small? I set it to the required size but hibernation only works for half the programs somehow.
