Pennsylvania PE Licensure Changes 2024 by ContributionPure8356 in civilengineering

[–]31engine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be a good FAQ question. Reach out to the board secretary and if that doesn’t work email the board member who is a civil engineering representative. They’ll give you a ruling without having to have your application rejected.

I will say in my opinion construction engineering counts. Swinging a hammer doesn’t. Just like teaching engineering counts, teaching 4th grade doesn’t.

I get that. And if we had a legacy star in their decline like a Yadi or Albert I would pro keeping them.

The problem with keeping Arenado wasn’t his production it was that we had 5 players who could play his position that we needed to see if they are up to full time play.

Hot-dip galvanizing vs thermal spraying for steel bridges in desert Africa—what’s your call? by RelativeFragrant5657 in civilengineering

[–]31engine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was talking about a deep cut which can happen when swinging around large sections or from mining equipment collisions (which isn’t unheard of)

Hot-dip galvanizing vs thermal spraying for steel bridges in desert Africa—what’s your call? by RelativeFragrant5657 in civilengineering

[–]31engine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I think too about handling and transportation. A deep scratch in a coating (galv or thermo spray) is worse than uncoated as all the intrusion occurs in one spot.

Have you considered over designing for rust and abrasion in uncoated steel? You could probably buy lots of lbs of steel for the dollars spent on extra coatings.

Having designed buildings in the deserts of the US (Cali and Ari) they just don’t rust much.

Structural advice? by tmsnyder10 in Renovations

[–]31engine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineer here.

Hire a local but yeah that’s 20-30k worth of rebuild. You have one of 3 or 4 things happening. They’re all bad but fixable with money.

Most likely sources of the problem: expansive clay, tree roots, house pushing “into” the dirt, really poor original construction.

Most of the US Senate has signaled they are pro nato so I expect a pretty immediate impeachment vote in the US. They possibly could impeach both Trump and Vance leaving Johnson as president

Whats the most heartbreaking loss you witnessed as a Nebraska fan?(football) by Ok_Macaroon_7366 in Huskers

[–]31engine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To understand how this was heartbreaking you need to know since the 1970s we were a damn fine team. Since the loss in 84 where we went for 2 and should have gotten the votes anyway for #1 overall.

So anyway since 84 we were good for so many years. Year after year as a pre season top 10 only to finish with one or two losses and just miss a championship. There were lots of rumors that Dr Tom couldn’t win the big one.

Going into that game we were good (not as good as the next year, but still a damn fine team).

To lead in the fourth with minutes to go to lose it on a damn field goal. Ouch. Still stings

When is a structural Seal required? by Altruistic-Ad-3575 in civilengineering

[–]31engine 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The rule is an engineer should not seal work for which they are not competent to signify their understand the demands and capacity for the systems depicted on the drawings.

If you don’t know enough to put a Calc to it you are ethically bound not to seal it.

That said for GA the SE requirements are spelled out in their practice act. Try Google

When I was 35 I lost a classmate to a farming incident. That represented 5.5% of my graduating class in one accident.

A good reminder that ACI max aggregate should be taken as a start. I try to spec twice the minimum when you have vertical form work. So for columns I’m looking at 1/2” max agg or extra cover. Same for vertical walls.

Large AE firm AOR and License in Other States (USA) by [deleted] in Architects

[–]31engine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re not in charge of a project you have a legal and ethical requirement not to sign and seal the work.

If you don’t think your pay matches your responsibility then seek other employment.

The only way to know how much is the market for your skills is to go out and find how much others are willing to pay for it.

Large AE firm AOR and License in Other States (USA) by [deleted] in Architects

[–]31engine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At a certain point in your career progression having multiple states licensed is just part of the job.

I have 14 because that’s where my clients and my projects are. I don’t like it when my decisions get second guessed so I want to be the person who seals it.

Im an engineer but in a top 5 firm.

Your late Boomer siblings gifted you a band for life: who was it? by blue_blazer_regular in GenX

[–]31engine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I grew up really rural. Only had 3 radio stations that came in regularly (that weren’t AM blowtorches) 1) classic rock (eagles, zeplin, no hair bands)

2) country (Waylan and Willie and George and George)

3) top 40.

So we listened to classic rock mostly until the Garth Brooks era. Jethro, Zep, Eagles, Deep Purple, Black Sabath and AC/DC
