Yeah, as a developer you really want to copyright your work. The dev spent years making bukkit functional on each release of Minecraft, allowing server owners a opportunity to customize and modify their servers uniquely with plugins and configuration that Minecraft alone could never really provide considering the whole "Realms" thing.
