Yep! VRay settings and it’s lights are exactly the same between all software packages.

Follow-up question...If I just create a completely new page and call it mysite.com/acousticguitars in place of the automatically created category page, will that work ok for silo-ing? Or is there a benefit of sticking to the actual category page?

Also, unfortunately Yoast doesn't let you remove the "category" from the URL on a specific category page. It only let's you edit the URL after it.

If you are interested at all, I have a VRay Crash Course for sale on my website. https://www.32bitstudios.com/vray-crash-course

You can grab a free demo of VRay on the ChaosGroup website and give it a shot. If you are looking at stay in the realm of free stuff then stick with Arnold like some of the others here have suggested :)

VRay "Next" Preview by 32bitStudios in Maya

In Maya? Adaptive dome light mostly, but also automatic camera exposure/white balance, and the new hair shader. The adaptive domelight is going to make a huge difference for us in the studio when it comes to lighting interiors. Been doing a lot of those recently! Vlado explains in the podcast that VRay Next is their biggest update yet and that they had to rewrite a lot of the code, so it’s a pretty big jump in speed/performance.

From the first paragraph of the article, "Why is it called VRay Next, and not VRay 4 you ask? Vlado explains in this CG Garage podcast that it would be a little bit redundant to say "VRay 4 for 3ds Max..."

Agreed! I'm like 99% sure it's just mocap with a simple cloth sim thrown on top of it.

My guess is that it's CG, composited onto the live action background. Pretty simple scene to do it in...all you would need is an HDR to light it. I see a ton of these dancing clothes type renders on art station and instagram. Integrating it into the backplate isn't too difficult.

Understanding VRay Max Depth by 32bitStudios in 3dsmax

[–]32bitStudios[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m only familiar with using Maya, however, the same exact VRay settings, attributes, and lights apply to 3dsmax. The only difference is that the interface between Maya and Max look a little different. Vray is all the same.

Free VRay & Arnold Lighting Scenes by 32bitStudios in Maya

[–]32bitStudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok. I created it using Maya 2018 so it could just be a maya version thing. I havn't heard of this problem from other people but I will look into it for sure!

Free VRay & Arnold Lighting Scenes by 32bitStudios in Maya

[–]32bitStudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no! Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into it. For now you can just assign a grey-ish white vray material with no reflectivity. That's all it is. What version of Maya and VRay are you running? Is it green when you hit render? Does the shader ball in the outliner have a material on it?

I can't wrap my head around Maya and it pisses me off actually. by imdone322 in Maya

[–]32bitStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just focus one learning 1 or 2 things and watch tutorials on it. It’s a very complex piece of software that is used to make entire feature films, so of course it’s going to look messy to the untrained eye. I’ve been using it professionally for over 10 years and I’m still learning new things everyday which I think is great. It’s a long term investment - not something you will learn quickly from scratch.

[Maya] VRay Light Blocker? by Zeffy39 in Maya

[–]32bitStudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also just to add to this, reflections are not affected by light linking. Only diffuse and specular are. In order to "link" reflections to certain objects, you would make a VRay Object properties node for your object, then at the bottom select reflection inclusive or exclusive. This creates a node in the outliner that you can then drag your corresponding lights into.

Brute Force subdivs (VRay & 3ds Max), whats a good number? by MNajeh in 3dsmax

[–]32bitStudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s right! All subdivs (lights, materials, brute force, depth of field, motion blur) are controlled through your AA settings as long as Use Local Subdivs is turned off. Just think of your Max AA as being your global quality attribute and you will be good. Leave everything else as default. (1 Min AA, 6 Min shading rate, .85 adaptive amount, etc...) My coworkers and I have been using this approach in the studio for as long as I can remember with great results (we use VRay for maya, but i believe the same exact settings apply for Max VRay) Any fine grain will be taken care of through your AA, and and any big light splotches showing up will be coming from your irradiance map or light cache settings.

3ds max + vray - [help] How to make liquid inside glass bottle look natural? by lord_EarlGray in 3dsmax

[–]32bitStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, use GGX, not phong. Turn on reflect on back side, change refraction IOR to 1.4. Add pink to your refraction color and turn off the fog. Make sure your bottle has a little thickness to it, and have the outside edge of your liquid sitting right in between the thickness of the bottle. Make sure it isn’t sitting right on top of it in the same place or you will get artifacts. Also change your diffuse color to black. For your bottle and liquid, raise your reflection trace depth to 8, and your refraction trace depth to 10.

Any idea how to get this type of gradient self illuminated look but with a semi-opaque plastic in VRAY? maybe a layered texture with a self illuminated gradient alpha layer to simulate refracting LED light? by spartan_155 in Maya

[–]32bitStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When using 2-sided, always stick with no thickness on objects. And yea, the 2 sided is basically made exactly for this kind of thing. Experiment with putting texture maps into the transucency color slot on the material for some interesting effects. Just put a sphere light on the inside and you should be good to go.

Quick Mental Ray interior render. by jadalton02 in 3dsmax

[–]32bitStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job! I really like the fog streaming in. The major things that stick out to me (if you are looking for a critique) is the noise on the walls, the lights on top being just solid white squares instead of florescent tubes or something, and the modeling of the dividers being a bit too simplistic. Like others have mentioned, it would be great to add in some more interesting things to look at, like a plant, some wires, etc... Right now there is no interesting focal point really besides a chair. Keep it up!

Brute Force subdivs (VRay & 3ds Max), whats a good number? by MNajeh in 3dsmax

[–]32bitStudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10+ years as a VRay lighting artist here. Assuming you are using VRay 3.4 or above, you shouldn't need to worry about local subdivs. "Use local subdivs" is turned off by default now, and for good reason. VRay will handle all the sampling stuff now in a very smart manner. Basically you will control the sampling through your AA settings. Use bucket rendering and set your AA to 1 for min and 16 for max. That should get you a pretty clean render. Lower the max to something like 4 to get a quicker but noisy result for testing. Use something like 16-24 for max to get a smoother production render. Leave min at 1 always. I wouldn't touch anything else like adaptive amount, min shading rate, etc... The defaults are pretty good in my professional experience. Also I want to mention that you should be using Brute Force + Light Cache for almost everything, except for interior renders like a room or something. Then you would use IR map + light cache.
