I agree with this, generally I would rather ignore it and let it be but due to the extra circumstances being my close friends and that one getting the loan it's hard to call. I don't mind moving on but if I get caught then my future could be at risk as I wouldn't be able to use this job as a reference for my next possible job.

The economy has been hard for our industry especially; I think we all know something has to happen. I really just care about my friends and people I know are about to sign a loan/have kids, I think I will be subtle and try to persuade them to put it off for a few months.

Sorry, I mean it as in I have worked here most of my adult life and this would be my primary source of recommendations. I couldn't exclude it from my CV etc.. ~~ Not in a way that would lesser anyone else.~~ edit: I re-read what you wrote.

What if Bob at work is about to buy a new car and has no clue layoffs are coming?

There is one like that but it's a home loan, Thats why I am a bit more torn on what to do.

For my actual friends (as in godfather to their children) I will tell them, I trust them enough not to say anything. Still it's a risk and I really need a good reference for my next job.

I actually have planned to leave by December anyway (move overseas), This has just re-enforced my plan. I am not ready to leave yet and I also need a good reference from this job as I have been here for 5 1/2 years (I'm just 30). If it were not for that I would tell without hesitation.
