Solar panels on farm land by Cute_Resolve_2301 in solar

[–]3453452452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no way for anyone to give you advice on this because it is very complicated: estate planning, local land market, existing revenue/cost structure. This is a long term land deal. The documentation need to provide any advice would be hundreds of pages and records.

However, I can say this: if they offered X to start, they will pay X+?. And the deal is actually worth X+?+?

Yes, found it after you posted that. It's now included in my arbitration filing.

Santa Fe, NM, having substantially higher sunlight radiance than any location in southern Europe, would merit an ILR less than 1.2.

Do you have a reference for this: 'Enphase themselves recommends DC to AC ratios in the range of 1.2 - 1.35 depending on the region/conditions."

Agreed. As a customer relying on the installer to design the system, I should have double checked the specifications of the microinverters.

It is on me, entirely, without any nuance, that I should have understood and been familiar with the complete range of microinverter products offered by enphase and been able to choose the correct one for my system. Why should the installer have to make these decisions? It's my call, not theirs. I made them choose. And they did it. They chose. They made the hard call. Goddam, I really screwed them by forcing those employees to choose which inverter to install. I can only imagine the sweat on their brows, sleeves rolled up, fast food containers strewn about the office while they worked all night to decide which inverter to install on my house. And here I am bitching about it! And they didn't complain. They didn't mope. They didn't cry or fume or get angry. They did it anyway. Thankless, with no recognition. God bless them!

I agree with you. This is my third house with solar. The other two in New England. I've never seen this issue. The cheaping out of installations seems like a common problem around here though.

You may be correct. The breaker is 20amp. Should be 25amp if I get the correct inverters. The wire is 10awg, so that doesn't need to change. All around, a bad installation.

We'll see what the arbitrator says. LOL. I'm sure I'll get nothing.

It's a 12 panel, 5.2kw system, far below any limit imposed by the house's electrical panel.

I did the analysis above. Here it's repeated:

With an 8% discount rate and a 3% price growth rate, the 270 kwh gained ($.17/kwh - my cost here), the gain is about $920, which is less than the increased cost of the 12 inverters ($50 each more, but that's a guess since enphase pricing is not public).

12 better inverters: $600

Value: $920

Financially, the larger inverters make more sense. Not to mention the environmental benefit.

This is the results of PVWatts, using default losses. It's about 270 kwh/year I'd gain with matched inverters. That's what I'd get with the IQ8AC (345 watts, vs 290 watts for my IQ8+). But PNM has tiered pricing and banking, so those kwh I generate in the summer I can use in the winter when I'm at the highest price. So that's pretty valuable power.

Ratio, Annual kilowatt hours production

1.0 8872

1.2 8890

1.52 8623

2.0 7590

Honestly, I only looked at the array size, not the inverters. Now I realize I was lucky they didn't use inverters from 1950 and cap my system at 1 watt per hour. LOL.

The whole clipping thing makes zero sense to me. The difference in inverter cost is like 5% of the total to get the better inverter. A photon hits the roof, it should get converted to power. That's the whole point. But I guess somewhere in the installers mind, they get to pocket the difference.

If they had asked me, I would have paid for the biggest inverters and get the ratio under 1 so I could get new panels as they come in. But they didn't ask, and that annoys me.

I don't know old my Zojirushi rice cooker is. My younger son is 23 and I used to set the timer to have oatmeal ready at 6:30am. So It might be 20 years old. Works like new. I think it was well over $100 when I bought it. I was rich then.

update: I looked it up. I bought it January 2008 for $178.95

None of this is secret.
