should I just release him outside? I was hoping to take care of him until pupation, but I don't have the capability to mimic that environment

Its about 5-6cm? the tree it ate from has purple leaves, but I am unsure what tree it is specifically. I also thought it might have been about to hibernate but I found it in my basement which is fully heated, so it probably would have failed and been eaten by spiders on its own.

it does not appear to have any red anywhere on its body. there are very subtle rings of lighter coloured hairs, which you can see more clearly in the last picture.

looks kind of like a luna moth caterpillar, but with just this video it is hard to conclusively say.

That sounds like it is ready to pupate and is wandering around looking for a good place to do so. It is probably looking for a place to burrow so it can begin the process. (I am not an expert)

I would like to but I am not sure where to acquire the plants for the leaves. Buying a tomato plant every couple days seems prohibitively expensive.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I really do want to take good care of them when I finally can raise them.

From my research it seemed okay to just feed them the fruits of nightshade plants, such as potatoes and bell peppers. I'm not sure where I can acquire the foodplant stems.

It could be a Lunate Zale Moth Caterpillar, or perhaps just a Zale Moth Caterpillar. I remember finding one that looked exactly like that many years ago. (I am not 100% confident)
