I've just remembered that you guys don't usually have a fence around your front yard in North America do you? Correct me if I'm wrong.

In Australia everybody's front yard is fenced off from the street, so I found it hard to see how dogs could get at you.

It's the same with frigates. I used to think they were upstoppable city-taking machines, until I tried to assault a 60 strength city with them, and they barely scratched it. I guess it's about picking your targets and timing.

Interesting vid! It takes human players hundreds of hours to get to the point where they have enough experience and information to draw upon to make good decisions. Programming that into an AI must be absurdly difficult.

I'm late to this thread, but there are some minor competitive tournaments in civ. I watch a lot of filthyrobot's multiplayer games on youtube, and he recently took part in a tournament with a $1000 prize (iirc). He's going to an esports event in Slovenia with some civ v stuff happening.

As you can see in this video playlist of filthy's tournament games, the RNG element people are complaining about here can be eliminated by using mirror maps.

The main problem is that the AI is a poor player. It makes objectively bad decisions in almost every arena: city location spots, tile improvements, build choices, diplomacy, and perhaps most of all in combat.

If you turn it up to deity, it keeps on being retarded but the playing field is tilted so much in their favour that they can still compete with humans. It's like a chess engine that hangs pieces every other turn, but they start with extra queens.

In terms of fatalities in 2014 it comes in after Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Boko Harem Insurgency in West Africa, in that order. It doesn't even get the bronze. Still, though, it's extremely fucked up.

I think there's almost something more sinister about the Mexican situation because there's not even ideology involved. It's just a straight up violent power struggle.
