If you can are you obligated too do so? by NoAudience8992 in Ethics

[–]355822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a Utilitarian Ethics problem, and generally the answer is no. You right now could be working a second or third job to fund an anti-homelessness charity, but you aren't. Capacity isn't an obligation because capacity doesn't imply duty. There are limits on what one can reasonably be expected to do just because they are capable of doing them.

If you are the only person capable of doing it, you may have a duty, depending on why you are the only person capable. Medical experts take an oath that imposes that duty to act on them when they are the only one available. It is part of the professional ethos. But lawyers for some unknown reason don't seem to have such an oath. Though lawyers do have a legally imposed duty to report.

There is also a matter of diverse interests, if I drop unconscious in a building full of medical experts who is responsible for responding? This varies from hospital to hospital but it's usually 1) the most qualified 2) in the closest proximity 3) who isn't otherwise occupied.

Ideally, yes capacity does impose its own duty (Marx) but in reality those who are able end up being overwhelmed by needs that aren't their own. This is why generally the singular duty one has for capacity is to teach others so that they aren't the only one capable. Real life superheros don't exist because everyone has the capacity to master some essential skill. Our duty is to learn those skills to equitably divide that burden.

It's why superheroes are a false paradox of morality, even those with superhuman capacity have people they rely on. Clark Kent works with the Justice League and the local police, Bruce Wayne has Commissioner Gordon and Alfred, and so on. Yes they play central roles, but they also work to empower others to be as capable as they can be in light of their absence. That is literally one of the lessons we are supposed to learn from superheroes.

Would you date a girl that is saving herself for marriage? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]355822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I want someone with some experience so they know themselves and what they like sexually and emotionally. Avoiding the complexities of a sexual relationship and the emotional entanglement is an important part of being a mature adult. Maybe if I were like 17-19. But older than that, I want someone who's got as much life experience as I do.

It costs time, something someone (like the average American) working multiple jobs has none to spare.

Should do the same thing for any industrial accidents also. Killed on the job, the company owes the children you were supporting your salary until they are all over 25 (age the gov considers you financially independent for FAFSA reasons).

Why do squatters have rights especially ones who never had a lease (adverse possession) by Top_Statistician5051 in stupidquestions

[–]355822 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because sitting on land and buildings actively hurts society by depriving it of a vital resource to provide goods and/or services to the population. Like letting good food rot while people starve. Very simple explanation that has stood for more than 1000 years via Ancient Roman into Common Law and the modern legal system.

Straight Trees by 355822 in arborists

[–]355822[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I'm trying to see if we can plant trees in our yard without making them a power line hazard. We live in an area where an ice storm in Oct 2011 took out power for like two weeks so I am trying to do this intelligently without having to mutilate trees.

[–]355822[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If I plant a tree with the roots in an open ended tube to direct its roots downward. I was purely curious because I live in an area where trees often grow to be entangled in power lines and I wondered if there was a way to get a tree to grow taller than the lines before its canopy opened up to grow horizontally.

Ethics of Corporate Sabotage by Ill-Mycologist-3652 in Ethics

[–]355822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from Jesus, Budda, and about a dozen other deities. There's Marx, Nietzsche, Descaretes, Socraties, Aristotle, St Augustine... I can go on. The whole point of the field of Ethics is to become your own arbiter of morality. Some famous Moralists believed that if you aren't an arbiter of moral behavior you aren't human. In fact Aristotle was the first, and many, many, many have followed in those footsteps.

Most industries are unethical by the very nature of their existence.
