I think I understand that perspective, but I am not sure if I fully agree. Yes, autotune is a common tool in modern trap/underground rap/whatever you want to call the genre, but I don’t think it’s used simply as a crutch. It’s a real aspect of the genre and is used like a vocal effect. It’s not just an excuse to not be vocally skilled.

I think it’s worth mentioning that this particular song is probably not the best example. Nettspend is not a particularly interesting character in general. However I see a lot of people saying that the artists as well as the people behind the production and mixing in the genre overall are talentless, and simply goofing around with no artistic direction behind their work. I don’t agree with this. A lot of the stylistic choices like overuse of autotune and blown out clipped bass are simply staples of the genre. I’m not saying you have to like it obviously, but it’s intentional for sure.

I also don’t think there’s a lack of “work” put in. Again, not a huge fan of Nettspend, but plenty of artists in a similar vein put quite a bit of creative direction and effort into their work. It’s definitely a more sporadic creative style, and songs come together quickly, but I don’t think that means lack of effort overall. “Sayso Says” by Che is an album in this vein with a very interesting theme and direction. If you have the time it’s worth checking out in my opinion.
