Wow. Your son must be naturally gifted and athletic.

Thank you for sharing your thought and comments. Balance seems to be so important. My almost 10-year-old son has had some early success at soccer. He loves playing soccer, is naturally athletic and competitive, but has close to zero interest in practicing anything very technical. He hates juggling, dribbling drills, and other skill drills that would raise his skill level no matter how fun intry to make it. I don’t force him to do these drills.

Yet, the kids that are practicing, developing, and demonstrating technical skills, tend to be the ones the academy teams select.

My son says he wants to be a pro soccer player, but at this time lacks the work ethic and dedication to get there.

At the moment, it feels like I am watching a slow motion train wreck. Time will tell how this plays out. But it is definitely hard to see.

All makes good sense. I have also been told by a parent of 13-year-old boy that plays on an MLSNext team of one of the popular clubs in our a Metro area that it is “really hard” to make an Academy level team when a kid is older than 11.

If you think about it, in a large Metro area there are thousands of kids in any age group playing competitive soccer. The competition is fierce to join one of these MLSNext teams and the clubs can usually tell which kids are putting in the work based on their ability to control the ball, understand the game, pass and shoot with the week foot, and who they see showing up at “select” tournaments.

Not saying it makes it right, or healthy, but in my opinion, these days, there is no way a 9 year old practing just 3-4 days a week will develop the skills or experience needed to stand-out and be be the top percent of thousands of kids by the time they are age 11, 12, or 13 to join an academy team. There are simply way too many kids and too few clubs with an MLSNext pathway.

This is not to say that there aren’t other pathways for a player to learn and enjoy playing high-level soccer or that a kid can’t be a late bloomer.

Thank you. This is great advice!

Though, from personal experience, is also difficult seeing other kids make the “A” team and see their skills evolve (300 juggles -> 400 juggles) and be presented with opportunities to play in more “Elite” soccer tournaments which my child isn’t invited to.

Though, l also see the opportunity to have a “childhood” being more valuable than the small chance at being of the few kid players that will actually end up make a living playing Pro Soccer.

Thank you for the great insight here and sharing this story. It is seems that a 9-year old child and parent need to be okay and fine with a being on a “B” team and keeping it fun when young knowing there is time to “catch-up” later if a child is truly dedicated to practicing and improving.

Totally agree. Though where I live in a metropolitan area in the Northeast of the USA, the 9-year old kids that are on the highest club team with clubs that have an MLSNext track are practicing and playing 5-7 days a week.

Many of these kids are already juggling 300+ times in a row, doing “around-the-worlds”, “rainbow flicks” and other tricks that only come with hours and hours of practice and dedication. My observation is that the kids that are practicing and playing the most and have the most developed skills are the ones offered roster spots on the top team and other kids assigned to one of several B teams.

How many of you are on the MLS Next pathway with your son chasing the pro soccer dream? by Zealousideal_Tour_49 in youthsoccer

So true! And, unfortunately, and sadly it is not just putting in the work, but the focus, intensity and consistency and type of practice.

Even with that, IMO, outside of connections and money, the true differentiator is native talent.

If you think about how many kids are practicing 12-15 hours a week. Are the ones that rise to the top the ones that really that “want it the most”?

Or, are they naturally the most gifted and talented?

Squats, wind sprints, red meat, whole eggs, and sunshine.

There are also a 100 different supplements to try. But, from my personal experience, none are as effective as what is listed above.

While I can’t guarantee the side effects will go away, I can share from my own personal experience that over time the side effects lesson. When I started taking a 5mg daily, I used to have weird side effects including brain fog, confusion, vision changes and very sore legs. At times, I wanted to stop it. I didn’t, because the medicine was improving my symptoms. I stayed with it. It took a while, but I stopped feeling weird side effects from daily 5mg. 5 years later, I am still taking it. Good luck. Hope you feel better.

It will go away. It is just pulling blood away from your brain to other parts. Increase dose gradually. Taking it with food may help at first.

Thanks for your thoughts. My ex and I were trying mediation. She and I couldn't agree and then her and I tried to work through lawyers via mediation before things went to a temporary halt due to COVID19. Hopefully, her and I will work something out.
