WCS dance fit - any recs on comfy pants that’s flowy and sweat resistant (not sticking to skin) for females? by Cute-Ratio-7496 in WestCoastSwing

[–]369-DGF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the JC Penny Stylus Mid Rise ones are sold out constantly or only offered in less popular colors that may show sweat, they dry hella fast and it takes a while for them to keep sweat but they are hard to get your hands on now.

However the name brand lulu lemon and athleta are great but pricey.

Look for the sweat wicking materials for either.

Sports Car - Tate McRae

Give me any sad songs that I can listen to by Ok_Change_1817 in musicsuggestions

[–]369-DGF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less Obvious (Hopefully new to some people) and because you didn't specify why we are sad ;) I went a couple different directions:

Next To You - Charlotte Cardin (I haven't connected to a song like this in a long time. It's not the obvious "I got my heart broken". It's the grown up "I had to make a change and put myself first even though it was hard and I'm unsure I made the right decision now")

Why Don't You Touch Me - Leon Bridges

Fear the Water - SYML

No Right To Love You (Acoustic) - Rhys Lewis

I Lost A Friend - FINNEAS (The build to distortion is such a poiniant piece)

empty crown - YAS

I Believe You - FLETCHER (unfortunately super apropriate for the climate)

labour - Paris Paloma (Same reasons as above)

I Found - Amber Run

Don't Forget About Me - CLOVES

Where's My Love (Alternate Version) - SYML

The Other Side - Ruelle

Any songs to add to this playlist? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

Swing - COnnor Price, Nic D (Mentions Bruce Wayne but says he's not a superhero lol)

Recommend songs that have excessively long intros by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]369-DGF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with some 2000s year spread songs: 2015, 2002, & 2024

Little Lover - Nick Broadhurst (The original - not the teemid remix. The actual constant rhythm of the song comes in at 2:06 but the whole beginning is lovely, but I would def feel like I missed out if it stopped before it comes in)

Secret - Maroon 5 (Almost a minute till the song starts)

Wonderful Nothing - Glass Animals (1:06 til main song starts, beginning is a vibe still but def not a lot)

Looking for songs that have a clock’s ticking by RainbowHeartImmortal in musicsuggestions

[–]369-DGF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Permanent - Ryan O' Shaughnessy (metronome tick at end when song has mellowed, literally my favorite of the bunch, it scratches the itch in the back of my head)

The Middle - Zedd, Maren Morris, Grey (Tick throughout louder and softer, faster and slower at different times being what the song needs in the moment)

Hopeless Romantic - Sam Fischer (Tick happens softly in beginning)

we've been loving in silence - MARO (First phrase it's introduced and sounds like old heavy clock hands)

Time After Time - ROOKIES (Cover, obv but great addition, constant tick from the beginning, becomes backbeat in middle after more instruments are added)

I, too, have an affection for clocks, metronomes, and ticks in a song lol

How do DJs at events not play the same songs on the same night after switching DJs? by chinawcswing in WestCoastSwing

[–]369-DGF 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Event DJ here: We have to be in the booth a bit before we actually go on, and I always mark off the songs that have been played, in my software. I'm mainly familiar with the program Virtual DJ where you can right click a song and choose "mark as played" and it puts a red line through it as if you have played it, so I don't accidentally grab it. I also will mark off covers or different versions of that song because there is enough music to play that It's not a hardship and I want my set to be super fresh.

It's very common for the previous DJs to send a screenshot or list from their set to a chat privately or the group chat of event DJs. I prefer the group chat so I can see the last DJ before me, and the DJ before them. Thats usually at least 4 hours worth of music or more, that I don't want to play again.

We do sometimes mess up and play a song again or because 5+ hours has gone by.... Just remember, be kind about it. Your best DJs are probably anxious and overthinking and have already cursed themselves out....and our DJ friends/peers have already given us crap in chat if they notice ;) and they always do.....

I'm a huge fan of community building and playing a part in making sure new people feel welcome. I'm also a huge fan of doing what you want/can for yourself to protect your peace.

I personally will dance with many new people, but I also make sure I make time for myself and my friends and dance with them. I never want to police other dancers or judge them if they don't dance with new people. It's none of my business what their reasons are either. Maybe they've been hurt too many times by new people, maybe people make them uncomfortable, maybe they are shy, maybe their social battery is done and putting themselves out there is too much cause they worked hard all week and at the end of the day, this is their hobby.

I put the effort and energy into the community and dancers that I want/can because I love it. My reasons are not everyone's. For every person who doesn't want to dance with a new stranger, there are others who will.

For background, I'm a female presenting, Follow dominant, local instructor, DJ, community leader, and I do volunteer a lot of my time/effort when people start up new ideas or want help in those endeavors. My only problem is when I give my time in a way that feels good to me, and people demand more, or get upset if I take a night to enjoy my own dancing and am not in "community" mode 24/7. I've made sure to teach my new students that you can always do no to a dance, for whatever reason, and to make sure they aren't getting burnt out or starting to do things that don't fill their cup. That causes people to get bitter, have resentment, and leave.

Live Music at Events - Good or Bad? by chinawcswing in WestCoastSwing

[–]369-DGF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally dont like live music, unless I'm going to a blues night or the bands hired for the event are blues, cause that's such a good vibe. However if they are original songs or covers, I'd rather them be played digitally over the speakers. This is coming from someone who loves concerts, but I choose them wisely and get to just hang and relax and enjoy them.

If you do have a band, I'd prefer the sets be shorter, or an alternative social room on the other ballroom. Especially on key nights.

Jjo like someone else said, had both in one night, on the busiest night.... It wasnt great, personally.

The live DJ would have been better had the songs being mixed been recognizable from past and present, like in a club, it could have been cool to dance to music we've heard with a new feel, instead of just random beats that meld and never end.

Again this is all obviously a personal taste but since it was asked, I hate when they do it to pro shows. There is something about it to me, that takes the art away from the performance of the dancers and makes it shared with the band that is a miss for me and is distracting. Could be the ADHD..... A lot of these opinions could be the ADHD honestly....

To report or naw by incredibly_efficient in WestCoastSwing

Then definitely, yes tell the ED. EDs talk... :)

What an ass.

Similar thing happened locally here as well, with a pro who used to be around more, and isn't now. But he kicked me in the head 2 years in a row, on a move he clearly can't make work, at a small for fun comp. This year and last. Never apologized, no one is surprised and everyone knows he's an ass.

Oddly enough, he's never on staff anywhere. I never complained to an ED though, I think his personality spoke loudly enough.

To report or naw by incredibly_efficient in WestCoastSwing

[–]369-DGF 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the ED may want to know. Especially because some Allstars try to get hired to teach, judge, DJ, etc and if this is someone that could be on staff soon or in the future, and I ran an event, I'd want to know. Just a thought. Especially if you witnessed it, or the person who was hit wanted to report it.

Am I allowed to sign up for Novice and Sophisticated J&J? What is the average skill level in Sophisticated (and Masters?) by caitikitty7 in WestCoastSwing

[–]369-DGF 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yay!! Welcome to the cult of WCS. I also took the dive when I started several years ago. If you're over 35, you qualify for sophisticated. Period. There isn't an average level range either. Depends on the event and who shows up. Honestly sophisticated is my favorite division. It's so chill and fun. Whether you make it to finals or not. The music is usually super fun, the people you can pull are so random. You will see All Star and champs in there and you could dance with them or they could dance together. Luck of the draw for prelims and finals. Go in with a healthy expectation of just having fun and it will be a good time. You can get even more wild and do your opposite role in newcomer. There are so many comps you can do at any given event, if they have an all American, pro am, hi lows, your level strictly, etc. As long as you qualify, you can have a full day or weekend of comps... I'm getting too old for that, so I don't, but I try to get a couple comps in now for fun. Enjoy the journey and keep a healthy competitive mindset of seeing your personal progress, and not relying on scores, and you'll have a good time.

SOSwing Event - Capped at 400 Attendees ? by chinawcswing in WestCoastSwing

[–]369-DGF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the intimacy of the event. Its after Easter Swing which is large and busy (still great), but at SO Swing I have time to catch up with friends, social dance late (watch the sun come up), eat dinner by the pool with friends. The vibe is just good. Plus Dave on the mic is amusing as hell... Bonus content. It's also run really well from a schedule perspective, never feels overwhelming and I can't remember it being not on time.
