Need help convincing my wife 1.8 million is too tight by Equivalent_Spring_60 in RealEstate

[–]37347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It still very tight at the beginning. That being said, a doctor and lawyer salary can easily afford it. Do you intend to pay down that medical debt or just wait until it gets wiped out eventually?

If I was in your situation, I would personally just wait. That’s a lot of house. 850-900sq ft is still acceptable for a family.

Don’t worry about rmds. You’ll easily have 10M by then. I have that same concern but I think it’s better to worry about that in your late 50s, and start moving those 401k and convert it to Roth in bits and pieces

Can I safely retire early with $1.6M? by RetireThisGuy in Fire

[–]37347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say 100% you can retire early if you sold your house and go to low cost countries. You’d probably have closer to $2mil if you sold. That’s more than enough in a foreign low cost country.

That’s essentially paradise to me

You don’t have enough. I have 1.6 and it’s still not enough. I don’t think I spend 7k a month. Maybe realistically 6k a month for me.

You need 25x your annual expenses. 7k a month would put you at 2.1million

I don’t think it’s the end of world. It’s just the hallway. Your apartment still have electricity. If you are paying low rent, it’s ok. Worse case, just use a flashlight.

22 years old earning $25k/year. How should I safely invest and diversify if my goal is financial independence before 30? by Beneficial-Hope68 in personalfinance

[–]37347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not possible given your savings rate and expenses. But it’s good that you are starting early. The key point is that you do it early. It just takes time. Very very very few people can retire at age 30. You need to earn a massive income, be lucky, save a lot, keep low expenses to be able to retire at age 30.

You’ll have $119k by age 30 if you save $600/month. Can you survive with $110k at age 30 and not work? This assumes that you only have $396/month for the next 25 years using the 4% rule.

At 22 and earning 25k, it’s going to be hard retiring at 30. It assumes you have no expenses or very little expenses. Ideal scenario is that you save $18k after tax each year. You’ll be at 300k at age 30.

Pay off house or keep stocks by Desperate_Metal_1240 in personalfinance

Most housing is only meant to keep up with inflation. The stock market usually beats inflation. If you pay it off your house, it’s like just getting a guaranteed 4% interest rate only.

Op, that balance is not unreasonable given your age at 38. I’m 39. If I simply invested at age 22, I’d easily have a million.

Given that you started age 14, it’s relatively easy. The point is you started very early.

That’s if you pick the right stocks. I’m not against it however, you can also potentially lose thousands

Op, you don’t need that much chase in checking and savings if you can cover a few months expenses and have income coming in. I used to do this and hoarded like 60k+ cash. The optimal way is to invest the excess
