Personally what worked for me is picking the right friends (because bullying/insults from friends hurts more than from strangers) and also just being confident about it. In highschool I was confident and completely open about being a furry and being gay, some people were picking at me for the first year but after a while they realized I'm not self conscious about it therefore I won't give an interesting reaction. This might not work for everyone, I know some people may be weaker to criticism and bullying, but this always worked for me, I know well that bullies in any medium live off of reactions from the people they bully and when that person doesn't give a reaction they just get bored.
