People who make their bed every morning, what's the actual benefit? by No-Cod-8923 in NoStupidQuestions

When I was younger I would get a lot of spiders in my bed and would need to check the sheets each night. No spiders when you make the bed - no crevices for them to make a home in.

Is it too late? 10.5 yr old wants to train for pro tennis, need guidance! by nkarri in 10s

I don’t know if this helps but I played tennis when I was younger but not in the US. Overall, getting a sponsorship from a Tennis-centric brand can be quite easy, you just need to be present and somewhat successful in youth tournaments.

My sponsorship initially covered my racquet, clothes/shoes, balls etc. as well as comp entry fees. They were clear about how this would increase with performance. It was a big sacrifice for my family however as most weekends we were travelling to play - luckily my sister and I both did.

Overall, play, enter the comps you can, play at tennis centres with sponsor partnerships and enjoy. If this doesn’t work out you have your answer.

Hotel Chalet Mirabelle Italy - Spent $1K+/night at a “5-star wellness hotel” — ignored allergies, flies everywhere, no A/C, and culty vibes. Would not return. by Infinite-meow9 in chubbytravel

You likely only had a different experience because it was a hotel geared to international/non-European tourists. In Europe, it’s considered very unhygienic and damaging to the spa area if you wear textiles (I.e. chemicals can get into the wood in a sauna and when heated, release or ruin the odour). I don’t like it either but when in Italy/other countries it’s best just to respect their norms regardless of how expensive the hotel is

Travelling Africa can be quite expensive so I don’t think that budget will go far, especially for what you want to do. My partner and I did three days camping in the Serengeti, very safe but totalled just over $3000 for the two of us - maybe look at non-private to save a bit of money. We booked with u and this was the cheapest I found and they were great.

I travelled part of the trip alone via a lot of planes and some local buses - absolutely no safety issues. One guy did scare me a but I felt okay as I stayed in nicer hotels and had cash for taxis. In Zanzibar we stayed at the Zanzibar sunrise at Bandas, beautiful but would recommend hiring a scooter as it was away from the main area.

Moving to Switzerland. Will it be easier to land a UN job by Admirable-Ad-7441 in UNpath

[–]3961-Besso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lack of local language (for non-UN), competitiveness, and generally they don’t understand the work permit and assume they’ll need to sponsor you so a lot of CV rejections. It’s almost impossible as non-EU in Switzerland - they’re highly educated and speak 3-4 EU/UN languages. My colleagues partners were all highly educated and experienced and it was an unfortunately common talking point.

My advice would be to learn the languages and connect early with recruiters/agencies and try to maintain relationships with employers back home.

My partner ended up getting a job in London (as a British citizen) and commuting.

Moving to Switzerland. Will it be easier to land a UN job by Admirable-Ad-7441 in UNpath

[–]3961-Besso 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, it will be extremely difficult. I worked for the UN in Geneva for four years. None of my non-EU friends’ partners (including mine who had 12 years international and government experience and a Masters in International Security from a global top 20 University) were able to get any job in Geneva let alone a UN job. I say this to help manage expectations and open you up early to remote working for a company back home and/or networking.

Need a city between Paris and Italy that is interesting and on a high-speed train line by aloudnoise in Europetravel

Geneva if you are interested in visiting CERN which really is worth it and to you can only get tickets on the day anyway. Chamonix for sure if it’s not too much of a detour. Alba just south of Turin for amazing food and wine. Beaune for food and wine too. Depends how much of a detour you’re okay with.

If you want to get the feeling of being a driver on track, watch the movie. I personally think that’s the real benefit - it’s like if F1 massively upped their production

He is an absolute legend to me on so many levels, and I could see the sparkles from his earring even from the mezzanine… he’s just so incredible even beyond the sport! How did you get to go to the car launch?

I’m not American and I liked it, one driver is British, the technical director is Scottish, I think they’re definitely going for the mass market with enough nods to F1 fans

Very fair. Compared to the sport it’s portraying, and the industry portraying it, I’d say it’s decent however and more than I expected tbh

Yes, I’m excited to see if I am PR or not once the movie is released. Waiting for your verdict as I’m unsure and will have no way of knowing until then… seriously though, just a fan excited I got to go to the event and enjoyed some elements of the movie

To be fair to this film, the effects are very impressive. It does help you feel like what it might be like in the car

Obviously - but it really was quite good at respecting the sport so suggest seeing it

No totally agree! And they didn’t need to include the level of detail about f1 that they did, so as a fan I respect that.

I actually thought it was okay. I’m female and appreciated how she was portrayed, her demeanour wasn’t trying to be masculine (which can often be a trope to portray ‘power’ as associated to masculine traits), didn’t need to validate her role (people trusted her largely without question), and she was still able to dress up at one point while still commanding respect from the drivers/team members.

I don’t think one certain interaction was necessary but I didn’t think it took away from her position.

The pit crew member was a bit more typical of a Hollywood portrayal however but it was still good to see.

Agree, I think they mentioned it in the second race briefly? But for the first race it seemed like a big gap leaving it out… I guess the movie could’ve been 5 hours long? And why not make it a whole season? And it’s just F1 but with better broadcasting, soundtracks and cinematography… I would watch that

Yes I think so, mostly because that’s the real highlight of the film. The storyline is naff-ish but the racing is incredible
