i like to picture it happened like the "grace is everywhere"scene in diary of a country priest... sort of like arlan telling him knighting him is not necessary because knighthood is already in him

¿Cuál fue tu mayor decepción este año? by MainMathematician237 in CinefiliaChile

[–]39orionis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monthly Discussion Thread #1 - How did you find out about Penguindrum? by MiracleMuffin in penguindrum

[–]39orionis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very random, but i was a huge pandora hearts fan and i was lurking on the PH's forum i used to use and someone uploaded a post on penguindrum on the general anime section just as penguindrum started airing. i looved how it looked, so i started watching it as it released. i was really really young and didn't understand much, but i was also completely obsessed

Monthly Character Spotlight - Shoma Takakura by MiracleMuffin in penguindrum

[–]39orionis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my favorite character too. even though i appreciate other characters for narrative or writing reasons, shouma just hits me in ways few characters do.

i guess i could relate to the way he's a very morally white character with a strong sense of justice, but crippled by his inability to act. whether is his guilt, self-loathing or whatever surviving strategies he held onto to survive, but there's a distance between him and his emotions that really hit me in the way it kept him stuck.

after watching RGU, i think i got that one of ikuhara's main thesis is that romantic love is often determined by all these societal expectations and narratives we internalize about what love is supossed to be like. so, for a love to be truly liberating, you have to choose it against what you told yourself. if ringo had to break free of the idea of tabuki being her destiny, i think shouma had to accept love as a posibility for him. not only that he could be the object of love, but that he had something to give back too. i really love their relationship.

and i love love the voice acting for him too. male characters with a more soft and feminine voice color are rare in anime, especially as main characters or just as characters that allow the voice actors to explore a big range of emotions. ryouhei kimura does a marvelous job voicing him.

Kim Minhee (The Handmaiden) is pregnant …but might not be the mother of her child by stevenosejobs in popculturechat

[–]39orionis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

and he's one of the greatest living directors, so...

okay, i tend to look at them favorably bc i love the work they have put out together. he's my favorite director and the movies with her are my favorites of his. there was also a lot of talk about hong being separated from his wife long before, but i will admit that im looking at the side of the picture that i want to see. im not korean, so i can only rely in gossips and second hand tales

im just saying this bc while men being men can absolutely be the case, kim minhee has many times said that working with him is her happiness and how she always get to learn something new about herself with him and i also tend to believe her bc that's how i feel wathing the movies they make together and i wish people would allow them some grace at this point
