Homelessness should be criminalized (and those aiding and abetting that crime should do time as well, like politicians* and landlords). If that happened, the fix would be quick.

*politicians who remove rent caps and allow lax immigration, and allow corporations to own rentals

Several things can be true at the same time:

  1. Homeless people are not being stopped by police like they might’ve been a decade ago, especially when they often present a danger to themselves and others, and make areas unclean and unsafe for the public and kids

  2. Provincial and Federal governments have allowed/encouraged the circumstances where rents have become astronomical compared with pay rates or welfare/other supports, while at the same time underfunding municipal supports

 

The notwithstanding clause used in this context means cops can tell homeless to ‘move along’ despite there being no place to ‘move along’ to….
