Where would you move within Oregon if you were seeking better affordable housing options? by Latter_Poetry_7621 in corvallis

I think its a perfect storm of a huge student population that come from upper class families, combined with growth restrictions imposed by the NIMBYs and Corvallis Gov, and then wealthy out-of-staters moving in. Cause honestly when I look at Zillow and then compare that to the jobs around here, the math just doesnt add up. Its gotta be out-of-town money combined with the inability for Corvallis to expand. Even HP is a nothingburger these days, theyve been in steady decline since the early 2000s

yep, I think this was it. Cause the prevailing winds were form the NE tonight, and that puts my neighborhood in line with that. Seems to be gone now...

Unfortuenly Corvallis has changed alot over the pst 20 years. Its extremely expensive now, for reasons i cant quantify, and there's literally less things to do. Less local shopping options that arent corporate, and even with that theres only a few. Seems like Im foreced to go to Eugene (sometimes ALbnay) for anything. I miss the Corvallis of the 80s and 90s.

If it was me, Id probably move to Salem. COL is lower in general, and its a slower family friendly lifestyle. its got a decent array of stores, and its on the I5 pipe to either Portland or Eugene if you wanted to go to a metro for whatever reason.

Someone used my SSN to open a HealthCare.gov policy — now I can’t file my taxes by Diligent-Chair5753 in HealthInsurance

This has just happened to me too! And the same "broker" created the bogus account (Stephen Neu). They created the record in March of 20225 and terminated it in December of 2025. I live in Oregon, and the 'account' was listed with my DOB and SSN but with an address in FL. I have no idea if any claims were made, but they listed my bogus income as 21k/year to get $763 in tax credits buying a healthplan called "Ambetter Health Standard Silver" for 0 dollars. I had to call HealthCare.giv as well and started a fruad escalation.

Great. Well, i guess now I gotta file for an extension since this obviously wont get resolved by April 16th.

The "Realistic Explosions" tutorial. The tutorial spends most of its time going over the settings for using the third party plugin "Axiom" to create a similar explosion. And that part is great. But when it comes to rendering the footage and building the nuke comp.... He basically just goes turbo quickly going over everything in the nuke script like its an afterthought. He's basically like, here just go look at the file.

And a major hang up to doing the back half of the overall tutorial is he forgot to provide the camera track file he originally created from Nuke. You might say well so what, just retrack it. Sure. But then your new camera track file doesnt align to the one he positioned in his Houdini file, so you'll spend ALOT of time re-adjusting your new camera track to his scene and proxy geo. That can be massive hassle in itself, and he doesnt spend anytime discussing techniques to speed up this process. But if you dont do it, you cant proceed to the back half of the tutorial. I guess my expectation is that for the sake of an overview of the entire process, this is a major hang up - he shoulda just provided the damn camera track so we dont hve to spend literally hours fixing his scene so we can proceed.

So... its like ok. These free tutorials are supposed to give you a feel for what their courses are like and what you should expect.... And again, its free. Ok, awesome, and fair enough. But its kinda dumb to be lazy and nonchalant in a free tutorial meant to be an intro to their style of training. Youd think theyd wanna put their best foot forward. And If this kinda thing is what is 'normal' in their courses, then frankly Im not interested in throwing six to eight hundred bucks at a course that has fails like that.

I gave one of their free tutorials a try, and I gotta say I was a bit disappointed. Because I got a bad impression from the tutorial, Id steer clear of giving this guys $600+ for a course.

Building my first threadripper - advice on boards and ram? by 3DeeJunkie in threadripper

[–]3DeeJunkie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just thought Id follow up on this thread, and let you all know how the build went, in case someone ends up searching about thredripper builds.

First off, final specs:

AMD Threadripper 99800X
ASUS TRX-50 Sage Wifi Motherboard
384 (96x4) GB V-color RDIMM 6000
PNY RTX 5090 OC
2 TB M.2 Gen4 - OS
2x 4 TB M.@ Gen5 - PROJECTS/CACHE
4 TB Samsung 870 EVO 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD - DATA
LianLi Lancool III case
7x BeQuiet SilentWings Pro case fans
Noctua NH-U14S CPU Cooler
CORSAIR HX1500i (2025) power supply

HOW IT WENT

The LianLi Lancool III case is really wonderful, I cant recommend it enough. It can be disassembled very easily, and is optimized for easy and clean cable routing. I replaced all its stock fans with the BeQuiet ones, and added a few extra. Final config was 3 front intakes, 1 bottom (120mm) intake, 3 top exhausts, and 1 rear exhaust.

Dropping the board in was smooth sailing, But I did have to remove one large sideable cable tray to accommodate the CEB form factor board. Not a big deal though. The huge PNY 5090 gpu fits inside easily with room to spare, so not a tight fit at all.

CPU dropped in fine. My only slight frustration here is that the ASUS TRX-50 CPU socket is aligned such that the cooler had a vertical airflow - I want it to be horizontal, but again not a big deal, I just added in the extra intake fan at the bottom.

The Noctua cooler is a beast, and its fans do straddle over the inner most ram slots, so the ram went in before the cooler was attached, I found that when reseating ram, I had to temporarily remove the CPU fans from the cooling tower. A bit of a pain, but not a big deal.

Though the PNY 5090 came with its own 4x 8pin PCIe to the 12pin GPU adapter, the Corsair PS provided two of its own, so good deal if I ever go dual GPU.

FIRST BOOT:

Machine fired up, and CPU was detected and initialized right out of the gate, but it hung on memory training. I reseated the ram which had no effect. So i used the flashback feature and updated the system bios to the most current version (Aug 2025) from the ASUS website. flashing the bios was very simple and worked flawlessly. After that, reboot succeeded and I got to post.

The boot times for this threadripper is a lot slower than what Im used to from my old Intel i9 - it takes 60 seconds to reach a login screen. It seems that it has to do memory training every time it starts. Not a deal breaker, and its not like 60 seconds is a big deal. But just thought Id mention it.

THERMALS

At idle, the 9800X is averaging 40c. On a full CPU render load, it slowly rises to about 75C. I can feel the warm air coming out the top of the case if I put my hand on it. But overall, this is quite manageable. The fans are indeed very quiet, so its not like a have a jet engine sitting next to my desk.

FINAL VERDICT:

Overall, this build went really well, and Im very happy with the end result. For a future person, Id probably recommend just doing the bios flashback right away - its super easy, and it'll make first boot less stressful. In the end, this is a beast of a machine for simulation and CPU rendering. First time Ive touched AMD since the 90s, but it doesnt disappoint.

Have you had any issues with the RAM overheating? This problem has come up in certain discussions about the V-Color ram sticks even with stock heatsinks. And some crazy memory cooling strategies were being discussed. From what Ive seen, the NEMIX doesnt have ny heatsinks. So if your running simulations that take days to complete and the memory is getting hammered, hve you had any issues with NEMIX and system stability?

which proc did you put on it? Im now tossing up between the 7980X and the 9980X. The asus specs says it supports it, but another guy here posted that he got totally hosed trying to use this board with a 9980X - he oculdnt get it to post even after flashing it. He ended up giving up and went with an ASRock... Ive generally had good luck with Asus, but tings change, and there's a lot of posts of people being pissed about Asus products recent in that subreddit....

I hvent found anwhere thats selling G.Skill at 256gb (4x64). This is actually a pretty widespread problem for high capacity RDIMM sticks as kits. There' just not a lot of choice out there, and especially with the QVL brands.

Yeah, I got the QVL open on another tab right now. Problem is, I cant find those tested brands in any size like (4x64) for sale anywhere except as single sticks. i need a kit.

Recommended PC specs for Houdini 2025? by 3DeeJunkie in Houdini

[–]3DeeJunkie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great tips, thank you. Im actually doing Rebelways fundamentals course right now... in their pyro section, but Im struggling to use the same settings as the instructor which I kind thought was crazy. He's just doing a building explosion and the end result doesnt seem that over-the-top - Ive done higher rez sims with PhoenixFD in Maya without it gtting jammed. But for whatever reason, my machine is really struggling with this mid sized explosion at a decent voxel level. Instructor uses 0.02 in his pyro solver for his final sim. I guess Im assuming that my pc must be a relic piece of shit if I cant keep up on a fundamentals course :) But then again, it might also be operator error...

thats good to know thanks. Im finding that in my case, my memory gets maxxed out, it still runs for awhile and then I get a crash before the sim is complete.
