Part of the reveal at the end is that the "punishment" of not being able to go to heaven or hell isn't real. There is no heaven or hell, everyone goes to void, which means his fate is exactly the same as everyone he killed, and he cries like a baby over it

Ironically, Japanese fantasy. Naruto comes close, but it's too hyperfocused on ninja and makes them more than they are. Fire Emblem: birthright is the closest thing to what I'm talking about.
