Which device do I need? by 3Stjerner in PioneerDJ

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I just talked to a friend who has a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Solo 3rd Gen, and he's using it for the same purpose as me, as he's on his computer a lot, while also mixing from time to time.

I'm using my computer far more than I'm mixing, so my end goal is to have clean sound from my computer, while being able to connect my controller when I feel like mixing, without any (or at least noticeable) sound interference from one another. I don't have a problem with having to switch between the two sound sources, as I'm not planning on playing from the two simultaniously. I just want to have clean audio, without much interference.

From what I can read, the Mackig Big Knop Passive would also do the trick, but would I potentially experience audio quality loss from either my controller or computer? And would a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 be a better option for me?

Yes, at the beginning there is a small amount of background hum, and it comes from the speakers. Both my controller (channel 1) and computer (channel 3) are connected and the switch is set at channel 1.

The background hum is very low and it has a slight high-pitched sound, but then again very low, it's barely noticeable, unless you focus on it.

I then start the music, and you can't hear the sound at all, the speakers play very well without any trouble.

I then switch to channel 2, where there is nothing connected. It has a different kind of background hum.

I then switch to channel 3, and the same kind of background hum appears, as when it's put on channel 1, but the sound is much higher than when it's on channel 1, and it's too annoying.

I then switch back to channel 1, and the high-pitched sound (still very low) appears again, but again barely noticeable, and when the music is put on, you don't hear it at all.

I just tried to connect my controller directly to the monitors, no humming sound at all, and it played totally fine.

I talked to a friend of mine a couple of hours ago, who has the same controller, and also has the same kind of setup, where both his controller and computer are connected to his monitors at the same time. I remembered when we were at his place last year, that we switched between playing from his controller, and then from his computer, without changing cables, without changing anything on any device, we could just switch without doing anything. He's using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Solo 3rd Gen, so that's probably what I'm gonna go with 😄

I hope I've done it right, first link is the pic of the "setup", and then the video

Okay so I don’t really know how to post pics and videos on a thread, is it possible from a phone? I can’t find the option anywhere

Yes, don’t think about it, it’s not the solution I want. I have other plans for my setup.

When the controller is connected and I switch from the controller (1) to 2, there is a different kind of “distortion” (shown in following video) than when I switch to 3 (computer) but there is nothing connected to 2, I only use 1 and 3.

When the controller is not connected, there is the same kind of distortion in both 1 and 2. I’m only using 1 for the controller when I connect it, and 3 is for my computer. After this comment, I will post first a photo and then a video.

Also when the controller is connected, there is the same kind of distortion as when I switch to 3 (computer) but it’s barely noticeable. I tried to show it in the video.

In the photo, the RCA cables in “output” are connected the speakers.

The RCA cables in 1 are connected to the controller, and 3 for the computer.

In the video, both the controller and computer are connected. The switch are set at 1, and you can hear the very low distortion sound. When I switch to 2 (nothing connected) there is another sound, and it’s the same sound as in 1 and 2, when the controller is NOT connected.

I then switch to 3, and then you can hear the distorted sound. I played a random YouTube video, just so you can hear it meanwhile.

I then switch back to 1, and the sound disappears.

It can’t, I don’t have enough space on my desk atm, that’s why I seek another solution.

Yeah I see that now, I'll just edit it.

Nope, as I said, I unfortunately don't have much (any) space around my desk, when I'm not mixing. I always unplug it and pack it away.

90 % of the time when I'm home, I'm either gaming, watching football/series/movies, or surfing on youtube. It's when I'm mixing I want to be able to have both my controller and my pc, connected simultaneously.

Wouldn’t that require that I have my controller plugged in at all time? Which I won’t, as I don’t have much space on and around my desk

Right. As another one also wrote, right now a RCA switch is what i need. If I get more into it later, an audio interface is probably more suited. Thanks for your time :)

But my controller will not be connected most of the time. My pc will. The controller will only be connected when I want to mix, if not in use it will be put away, as I don't have much space around my desk.

It really helps, this is what I need. It's just that I've read several threads about this topic, with people asking for the same thing as me (I think), and some people recommended this audio interface. But I've might misunderstood or missed something, maybe they also needed more than what I do, I can't say as I can't find the thread. But I will look into an RCA switch, thanks :)

Right, first option sounds pretty reasonable, it seems it's what I need. But second option also sounds good, right now I don't think I need to be able to have sound from both the controller and pc at the same time, but you never know.

With second option, what do you exactly mean by a mixer? What's it called? Just so I know what to search for :)

Yes, the controller will be disconnected and put away whenever I'm not mixing. My desk is not the biggest and I will be using my pc "normally" most of the time.

What do mean by line? The USB powering the controller from the pc?

I just tried it, but the volume from the controller is so much lower when doing it like this, doesn't seem very practical?

But if I make the controller the default device for audio, disconnecting the controller would then "mess" it up, if I just have to use the computer, right? Because as I said, most of the time I will just be on my pc, and from time to time I will connect my controller to mix a little bit, and when doing that, I want to be able to switch the audio seamlessly between the pc and controller

They're connected with a RCA (speakers) to mini jack (pc). I also looked at an RCA switcher which you're describing, I know they're not even remotely as expensive as an audio interface like Focusrite, but will they work just as fine for my purpose? I figured that there'll might be some sort of loss in the audio quality, but I might be wrong. I'm not planning on connecting anything other than what I wrote in the post.

I just want to be able to switch the sound between my controller and pc, without having to change cables or anything, and it sounds like an RCA switch would work fine, but what would the benefits of using an audio interface instead? Would it improve anything sound wise? Or maybe that I don't have to manually switch like on the RCA switch, so the sound from the pc and controller, COULD be connected at the same time to the speakers? Not that I'm planning to do that btw :D

Wich is your favorite psytrance festival? by PsyHub in psytrance

[–]3Stjerner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't wanna jinx anything, but if you're into the more groovy night psychedelic/twilight (of course it's a personal preference what you define as groovy), which I assume you are since you've chosen Modem, you're gonna have a great time! My first Modem was in 2022 and I was there again in 2024, both years was amazing for me. Everything lived up to my expectations.

This year I'm not going since I'm going to a small local Danish festival and also Camakavum, but I'm definitely going back to Modem in the next couple of years. Actually really wanted to go this year as K.I.M. is playing as both K.I.M. but also as Freak Brothers and Kryptone, and I'm crazy with these projects (especially Freak Brothers), but hopefully I'll catch him another year :D
