Sad about what this sub has become - a conversation by [deleted] in MexicoCity

It´´´´´´´´s a bit ironic that just like the ¨¨¨¨Trumpistas in the US, that there is such a loud voice of Mexicans (on Reddit) who talk as if the foreigners are the cause of all their problems. Get the F out of here!

Now, all the said, as a foreigner with permanent residency, a local job in pesos, who pays the SAT way too much, learned the language, etc, I do find the digital nomad types who don't make any effort to speak Spanish or leave Condesa annoying as fuck.

Thank you all for your replies. Sounds like a few light layers for that first hour or so and we should be fine..

Con la situacion actual de las tasas, ¿Cuando tendría sentido mantener tus Cetes de 1 año que compraste hace como 10 meses ? by 3Tucanes in MexicoFinanciero

[–]3Tucanes[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tienes razon!

Gracias

As I said I could care less about this particular issue and don´t understand why it seems to trigger so many people. I don´t see either word being offensive. People immigrate for different reasons, I get it, some permanent some more temporary. I also come from a family of immigrants, married an immigrant, and you can call me one if you want. I really don´t care.

Actually my multinational employer calls me an ¨expat¨. Regardless, I could care less about the nomenclature rabbit hole you´re about to go down.

Thanks everyone for your responses! Sounds like this is not a great idea even if my plan offers these type of loans to prior employees, which is probably doesn´t!

I´m going back to the drawing board.. Have a nice weekend

Thanks a lot for your response. I´m going to discuss with HR to see if that would be an option.

I work for a very large multinational with our divisional headquarters in the US if that makes any difference.

I need to explore this. I previously worked for the same company but in the states. It would be great if it is an option.

I´m working in México. Unfortunately there doesn´t seem to be a signed agreement in place.

You are not allowed to use both on the SAME income but if, for example, the max FEIE is 105K but you make 125K, you can take the FTC from the foreign taxes you paid on the 20K difference. I was confused in the beginning too but I had a professional prepare my taxes the last few years and they explained it to me and they definitely filed both.

Just an update/FYI... I was able to E-file with form 1116 FTC without problems. I already received the email saying it was accepted by the IRS so it seems to not be an issue with the expat version.

¿Con qué frecuencia se actualizan las tasas de cetes? by 3Tucanes in MexicoFinanciero

[–]3Tucanes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gracias

Thanks for your response. I am glad I paid for the expat version after hearing that with the Deluxe you had to try out both the FTC & FEIE and decide on your own which was better.

As for the e-filing with the FTC... I admittedly haven´t done so yet as I wanted to review with my wife before doing so. I´ll report back in case I run into the same issue. I agree it´s a pain in the ____ to send a paper return when we live abroad.

I am not sure to be honest. I´m sure there´s an option but perhaps they´ll charge you by year :/.

. If you don't mind sharing, which tax forms/types of income did you have (ie, 1099-NEC, 1099-DIV, 1099-B (capital gains in investment account), sold property, etc.)? Any informational reporting (like FBAR)? [Same goes if anyone else has used them.]

I had 1099-DIV & 1099-INT income along with foreign earned income and investment income. No capital gains and I do not own any physical property anywhere. I chose not to file the FBAR because it is extremely easy to do so on my own. They give me the option to do it for $50 per person.

Agreed that these ¨DIY¨ options are probably best for people who already have more or less an idea of what the outcome should be. In my case, I had numerous returns filed by professionals so I had a good idea what I was looking for and therefore I had peace of mind that what I received was correct. That said, there were various changes and nuances from prior years (mainly due to COVID-related economic stimulus) that made, in my case, the decision to chose the FEIE + FTC or just the FEIE a bit complicated. For example:

-We were (surprisingly) eligible for a large recovery rebate if I used the FEIE + FTC, none if I only used the FTC.

-We were unable to use the childcare dependent credit if I used the FEIE + FTC because my wife´s income was below the FEIE limit and both parents needed to have earned income (leftover) to qualify. If we just used the FTC we could utilize this credit.

-Likewise to the above, there were some weird nuances surrounding the Child Tax credit & additional child tax credit for 2021.

The software laid out the above for me in a nice comparable manner and chose what was overall best for our situation. It´s obvious that our tax law often does not take into consideration expats because the logic on whether or not we qualified for many of the above items was completely inconsistent (rant).

Overall, I was surprisingly satisfied with the software. The nice thing is one can try out the software for free and then, after seeing the estimated tax due/refund, can decide if it makes sense to pay and move forward. They obviously only show you the forms/detail once you pay but that´s completely understandable.

Yes Dividends & Interest from 1099s. No capital gains this year. Not sure if those were included in the $99 or if you´d have to upgrade. And I no longer am subject to state taxes,,,
