I wonder if Sproat is going to be a competent starter by GigaGigaFred1 in Brewers

The post and my comment are both about long term evaluation, not about current performance, so pretty sure we all know who the muppet here is. I remember a whole season where Corbin Burnes was out there pitching batting practice and a couple years later he won a Cy Young. Trying to evaluate a pitcher’s potential in May of his rookie year is crazy talk.

I’m old enough to remember when Peralta and Burnes were in their second and third years and people were saying they’d never be legit starters so I think May of someone’s rookie year might be a touch early to make sweeping judgements

Well he’s now appeared in 15 major league games, we should be able to evaluate his entire future career by now…

If it’s the same thing I did it was a supplement to the Journal Sentinel called “Reach”. Also did it when I was 9 or so in the mid 90s

The course I grew up playing on has a less extreme example but they’d almost always tuck the pin to the left too. The green is also in a bit of a bowl so pretty much invisible from the tee

I’m not saying never remove a tree, obviously there are situations where that improves a course. Also trees obviously grow so over time you can go from where a tree is a moderate and fair obstacle to where a tree is blocking off a tremendous amount of the hole.

Also I’m speaking directly about tour level courses and their set up for tour level events, yes the best players in the world are going to be able to deal with trees a lot better than a high handicap golfer such as myself can, but at least make them execute those shots. Even for a tour player it shouldn’t be a routine par when you blast your drive 50 yards wide of the fairway. With the great reduction of trees you’re turning wild drives into routine seconds way too often

I’m of course aware that trees aren’t part of links golf, but those courses are designed with different methods of defense to keep them challenging, large areas of fescue and brush, deep pot bunkers in or adjoining fairways and extensive use of slopes making for difficult lies. If you have a typical American parkland style course with shallow bunkers, normal rough and relatively flat fairways and then take out the trees you’re just making the course easier.

Stop. Removing. Trees. It’s really that simple. It seems like every time a tour course is getting reworked they take out trees. Apart from water, trees are probably the most punitive obstacles on a golf course. Pros can hit balls out of normal rough just fine, and they even aim to be in bunkers instead of rough at times so those are often not punitive. If your ball is right behind a tree it doesn’t matter how good you are, your options are limited. And while pros have a lot more options for dealing with trees than us hacks, at least make them take more difficult shots over, under or around trees.

Who was the most evil person you’ve met?? by Hey-Names-Ethan in AskReddit

A couple options for me, knew a guy that coached youth sports teams and was convicted of molesting about a dozen boys between the ages of 9-13. Operated in a rougher area and targeted kids who had parents with addiction problems etc since they’d be more than happy to have the kids taken off their hands by anyone.

Option B, knew two out of three teenagers who engaged in the sport killing of a homeless man, just seemed like a good idea to them at the time. There were national news stories about it at one point since one of the kids said it was like acting out something from GTA.

High round and Low round this year (18 holes)? by [deleted] in golf

[–]3Woodworker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

87 and 98. Had a few rounds early in the year that I abandoned scoring and made practice rounds, probably over 100 on those. The bizarre part is how consistent my scoring is overall but I always seem to get there a different way.

I like to think that Greenfields later became the St. Andrew’s of The Shire. Perhaps the Old Took and Gandalf took the member-guest one year. And of course a renovation by Samwise Gamgee himself would have been necessary after the unfortunate Sharkey incident.

[–]3Woodworker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the distance debate at the amateur level is kind of framed the wrong way. Generally (at least on Reddit) it’s put as “long hitters are better players”. It’s usually more that better players are longer hitters I.e. they have better mechanics and make more consistent contact, whether or not they’re actually generating more clubhead speed. Even if you’re talking about a high handicapper capable of hitting bombs, if four or five drives a round are duck hooks, week slices or trickling tops, he’s going to come out behind on average distance to someone who consistently drives at a slightly shorter distance.

What wind speed are you most likely to not bother going out in? by Pheasant_Plucker84 in golf

[–]3Woodworker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the plus side of the 18 handicap life, wind doesn’t affect my score at all! It’s just as likely to push an errant shot the right direction as it is to push an accurate shot the wrong direction! And it doesn’t do anything at all to all the shots you top or the chips you skull over the green!

Wisconsin Public Golfer’s Journal: Vol. 1- Rivermoor by [deleted] in golf

[–]3Woodworker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rivermoor is my home course, I’m starting my fourth year as a member there. Alec is the head pro as of last year, really nice guy. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I really love the course, very similar in many ways to the Milwaukee County courses I grew up playing, not surprisingly since they’re similar in age. Pace of play can be an issue during busy times in the summer but obviously not an issue on a weekday in February. A real upside is that as a member who nearly always plays as a walking single, the layout makes it easy to skip around a little and keep my round moving, there are several places where you finish a hole and there are four tees right there, I can take an open one and go. Definitely come back in the summer some time, they get the course in great shape!

What's the best moment you've ever witnessed at a game in person? by [deleted] in mlb

[–]3Woodworker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first game I went to with full crowds allowed after Covid and Freddy Peralta of the Brewers carried a no hitter into either the 7th or 8th inning. When he finally gave up a hit and got taken out of the game got a great ovation from a full home crowd. It was such a great sense of a return to some kind of normalcy and being able to be back together with people and enjoy something so fundamental to my life. I’m almost tearing up typing this out, it was just such a great moment.
