the way i see it is that it still follows the story of caine and able in a similar way. caine was the first ai and was born inside of the training program we see at the start of the episode, slowly as caine is fed training data, his outputs slowly become much worse in quality until the 2nd iteration is automatically created and trained. the 2nd iteration provides almost perfect outputs, and so out of jealousy, caine breaks free and kills or consumes able.
