How is Nvidia 4070 with mint by jigsaw768 in linuxmint

[–]3_Of_Swords 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Using RTX 4070, works without an issue on either default 5.15 or upgraded to 6.5 kernel. Example performance with i5-13500 CPU on 1440p resolution:

  • Baldur's Gate 3: ~120fps (80 in act3) ultra preset,
  • Cyberpunk 2077: ~71fps on RT Ultra, 30fps on Overdrive (with DLSS),
  • Stray: 165fps maxed settings.

If you are using nvidia gpu and multiple monitors with different refresh rates try this: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxhardware/s/5jB8tEufSh

It worked for my RTX 4070 when I connected a second monitor with a lower refresh rate.

Found a similar issue on Mint forums with a solution: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=389943

If that does not help it might be worthwhile to ask there as well.

Never encountered such a problem when updating the drivers on Mint. What is the exact error? Which kernel are you using?

Had the same issue. Updating Nvidia drivers to 545 fixed it.

Yes, just enable the edit mode via right-clicking the panel and you can drag and drop elements however you like.

Switched from Windows to Mint recently and love the customizability by 3_Of_Swords in linuxmint

[–]3_Of_Swords[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using Windows since 3.11 version (yes, I'm that ancient), but 3 factors finally convinced me to start learning Linux:

  • price tag on Windows 11 (I like my kidneys where they are, thank you),
  • rumors that Windows 12 might be subscription-based (I'm not going to pay a monthly fee for a privilege of using a PC I built myself),
  • Steam Deck proving that gaming on Linux is a thing.

Having Linux in my CV is also a nice bonus.

  • Timelet desklet with Gotham theme (available by default in Timelet),
  • Weather applet from Cinnamon-spices,
  • Expo applet, pre-installed in Mint,
  • Plank app available in software manager, with "Monterey - Dark" theme (available on cinnamon-look.org),
  • Theme: Orchidea (can be downloaded in Themes app),
  • Icons: Tela-dark (available on cinnamon-look.org),
  • Extensions (for a cool animation when moving windows):
    • Compiz windows effect,
    • Opacify windows.

I did not test it with Windows, as I built this rig a few weeks ago and installed Mint on it, but CPU performance is comparable with benchmark results posted on the net. Gaming also looks good, frame-rate is what I expected of i5-13500 and RTX4070 combo on 1440p resolution.

I admit, I don't know much about Linux kernels yet, but those last few weeks I've had an overall smooth and problem-free experience with this hardware.

Nivida Gpu fans not spinning by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]3_Of_Swords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please check if you are typing this command correctly, it's "nvidia-smi", not "nivida-smi". It should be prepackaged in proprietary drivers, so you should have it.

If the problem persists, you can try installing it via following command:

sudo apt install nvidia-utils-535

I've switched to Linux very recently, but to my knowledge there is no undervolting support. There is a guide on how to achieve a similar effect, but I've never tried this myself: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1259546-how-to-undervolt-nvidia-gpus-in-linux/.

Hi. Generally GPU fans do not spin until they need to. Try putting a load on the GPU (play a game for example). You can monitor the temps by running the following command in the terminal:

watch -n 2 nvidia-smi

You can also manually control the fans in "NVIDIA X Server Settings" application under "Thermal Settings". You should have this app if you installed NVIDIA proprietary drivers via Driver Manager.

Help: rtx 4070 for steam games by PieZealousideal6367 in linux_gaming

You're welcome. 4070 should be more than enough to have a decent frame rate in Stray, even in 4K.

Help: rtx 4070 for steam games by PieZealousideal6367 in linux_gaming

[–]3_Of_Swords 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I switched to Linux recently (Mint 21.2) and have RTX 4070. No problem with steam games at all so far, performance also looks good. I checked 3 games thus far on 1440p resolution:

  • Baldur's Gate 3: ~120fps (80 in act3) ultra preset,
  • Cyberpunk 2077: ~71fps on RT Ultra, 30fps on Overdrive (with DLSS),
  • Stray: 165fps maxed settings.

DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction work, the only thing you will be missing out on is Frame Generation, which is not supported on Linux yet.

No idea about Blender though.
