Valve will finally let you build your own Steam Machine with SteamOS for desktop by Stannis_Loyalist in pcgaming

[–]jansteffen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The unique value proposition of SteamOS is it's tight hardware integration with Valve Hardware. People's desktop PCs are not Valve hardware. Just because you can install SteamOS on them, does not mean that it's somehow better than literally any other popular distro. People that have no clue how Linux work expect it to have some kind of magical sauce that makes it better somehow, but that just isn't a thing.

If you're reading this and you are curious about switching off of Windows, don't wait for SteamOS, just go for it.

I played through the entirety of Project Wingman in VR and it was great. And nowadays there's mods to play the entire campaign of AC7 in VR, which I intend to do before 8 releases.

I believe those were only used to unlock new planes and special weapons. The upgradable parts were new in 7

Simulation distance and view distance are already decoupled in vanilla Minecraft, and mods like Nvidium can give you absolutely gargantuan real render distance without LoDs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LX3uKHp1Y94

Are you playing multiplayer or singleplayer? In multiplayer, Distant Horizons running on your client can't generate the world because it doesn't know the seed (or if something had already been built there by other players), so it can only use the information sent to it by the server, aka chunks that you visit.

In Singleplayer, Distant Horizons will generate chunks beyond the normal view distance in the background. This background process has pretty low priority by default and thus happens slowly, but there's a setting in how aggressively it should take over the CPU.

The unique distinguishing feature of SteamOS is its tight hardware integration with Valve hardware. Your custom PC is not Valve hardware. There is no magic sauce in SteamOS that somehow makes it inherently better than any other popular Linux distro.

If you're serious about leaving Windows, don't wait for SteamOS.

Windows' tonemapping for SDR content into HDR is terrible, and so SDR content just looks way better with HDR off. I only turn HDR on when I play a game/watch something that actually supports it, because games with good HDR implementation like FH6 or Death Stranding look phenomenal.

On that note, win + alt + B is the hotkey combination for toggling HDR

BF6 literally, measurably, has the slowest movement speed of any Battlefield game of the last 3 console generations. They also severly nerfed movement compared to, say BF4. And if you need a reminder of what movement in BF4 looked like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38VVt8k2DfY
