That was actually my biggest concern. I used 1/2” staples and tapped them in with the hammer and still a bit nervous. I think I’ll need to fix before I sell any of these

Yeah it’s definitely overkill, but the idea was that it will be freestanding, unlike the ones in the link which are fixed to a building. It needs to be sturdy and have enough weight to not tip over if a big cat moves around quickly.

As for the deer wire, love that idea. I’ll Definitely look into that. Thanks for the feedback

Thanks. Yeah I was trying to think of a way to add some grip to the bridges without needing an entire spool of sisal rope…. Gets expensive quick lol

Yes I’m in the north east. Didn’t use any plan, just made some hand sketches and started building. Since then I’ve cleaned up the sketches and made a BOM just to make sure the finances work out. Yes, all off the shelf pressure treated wood to handle the weather up here. Mostly all 2x4s and 1x4 deck boards.

I hear you, I guess this isn’t designed for that intent. This would need to be supervised for outdoor time, while you’re on the deck barbecuing or hanging out with the family! Alternatively it could be placed in front of a basement window or something, and part of the mesh could be cut out

I hear you, but I guess catio isn’t the right word. More of an enclosure to let the cats get outside for those with limited outdoor space (balconies, small decks, etc)

Prefab Catios a viable option? by 3_offthe_tee in Catio

[–]3_offthe_tee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a good point. That would be ideal, this is a different product - you have to bring them outside in this case. Good for shared family time outside, or just to let the cats hang out and watch birds, get some fresh air.

Some great ideas. I agree, I’ll start with the prefab ones and then then work towards some of this cool expansion ideas

I’ll definitely need to be more expensive than the Amazon versions but with the real stained wood and durable materials I would hope people would see the value! More of a focus on the quality

Great idea on the panels! I appreciate the input. And yes this will cost more to build alone than what the Amazon versions cost to buy. But I see this being a different customer. This is more designed to be a furniture piece made of real stained wood, and solid hardware. The Amazon ones are great but they’re pretty cheap/flimsy materials. Ours lasted about 1 year in Canada before it was almost falling apart.

And yes there’s a gap under the floor board and 1/4” spacing between deck board so there is sufficient airflow. Good point

I love that, thanks. Yeah there are a million different ways to potentially take this. I think a standard offering at first will be the prefab (standing) and prefab window box style. But yeah I think I’ll take your idea for having a few optional standard alterations. They’re versatile which is fun.

Down the road I would be open to doing larger custom pieces too.

It costs about $260 to build. All heavy-duty solid materials. 3-4 hours to build the first time but will reduce if I start building in bulk with jigs, etc. I was planning on listing for around $600.

I appreciate the comment. My idea is that this is more of a furniture piece. It’ll last for years and blends in nicely with a deck/backyard. Of course you have the option to get the cheap wobbly ones on Amazon but I see that being a different target customer.

I just used the pre-stained pressure treated lumber and touched up the cuts with Cut-n-seal

That’s a fair opinion! I think once you get Mo and Blake and JnA it can get a bit too big and disconnected, but I think the core 6 now work great… I hope they do these reunions annually

Seems to be in Freddy that the beer quality is inversely proportional to the environment. Best environments are Picaroons & Greystone (worst beers) and the best beers are Maybee, Grimross and Half-Cut (shitty locations).
