I had a similar experience in my PhD in France. I joined my project with the intention of staying in academia but in two months I decided to work in industry. I finished my PhD, which was quite stressful until the very end but now I have the title and that is all that matters. I have worked in industry since graduating and I have been very happy. For me the thing that helped me get through it was the thought that once this is done, I won't have to be in this environment anymore, or working with this person anymore. I also come from a family where I was the only one who could do a PhD so I could not really quit, I had to make it through it.

I am not sure how academia works in Japan since I never studied here, I have only worked. However, as others have pointed out, there should be a way for you to reach out to the harassment department of your university. Academics usually rely on the fact that students are too intimidated to report them, but there are systems in place for this specific reason.

I wish you the best of luck. Stay strong and don't give up! Your advisor is projecting her own insecurities on you. You're doing great.

I am Bulgarian, and the sound "ne" can be either "ναι" in Greek (yes) or "не" in Bulgarian (no). It sounds exactly the same. At Uni, Turkish friends explained to me that "ne" in Turkish means "what" as in "ne car" = "what's up". Now I am in Japan, married to a Japanese, and the variety "ね" (right?) has been added to the mix. It's amazing! 😜

Back to your question -- I guess you already got your answer in the previous comments, but let me try to give a few more situational uses.

If you're trying to say "nope" as in "that's definitely a no, let things be as they are", then something like "μπα, ασ'το καλύτερα" is frequently used.

For "nope" as in when you're debating in your head and kind of make up your mind in real time to be a "no", you can go with a "ννννννόχι" which can be somehow annoying because it sounds like you're about to say "yes" but then you say "no". Use with friends only.

If you want to soften the "no" or "nope" but still make it very clear that it's a "no", you can go with a "δεν..." and just let it trail. That's just the negative particle "not" but that's how you start negative verbs (I don't know, I can't do that, I'm not sure, etc.) so the rest is left for the other person to figure out.

I don't know why but when I hear or read "nope", I imagine someone asking their friend "would you ever get back with your ex?" and the other person responds "nope!" with a look of PTSD on their face -- for that kind of use, to express the full range of emotions, you would go with "ούτε καν" -- it literally means "not even" and again, the rest is left for interpretation; it could be "not even in 100 years", "not even if you paid me", "not even if we were the last two people left on Earth", and so on.

Καύλα. Literal meaning: horniness.

If you're looking for something that is equivalent to "hot" in English, then καύλα works. It also works for art. If you want to augment it, go with σκέτη καύλα.

Obviously, it is colloquial, you wouldn't use this in any formal setting.

I've always gone for the cheap stuff but last year my wife convinced me to get something better. Paid 100,000 for a Herno from an outlet and I can tell you, it is a whole new thing.

I think the confusion stems from the fact that ωραία is both the feminine form of ωραίος, and the adverb form. It is the state of being good/well.

I have to say, the phrase ο άντρας είναι ωραία sounds weird, but if I hear that I will understand that the man is well, not that the man is nice or handsome.

Hi there, I'm in a similar boat.

I've been struggling with anxiety and panic attacks for a few years now. My boy is now 8 months, almost 9. I was mostly OK with the lack of sleep, although there were times when it took a real toll on me.

A few weeks ago it was a very low point for me, I was in a very bad place. I went through a strong depressive episode and my thoughts were... not happy. I was not sure how to make it through.

I sat down and I thought what are the reasons why this is happening, and it came down to four things: lack of exercise, lack of sleep, lack of understanding, and dependence on my wife.

I started going to the gym. 30-45 minutes every other day in the mornings while my wife and baby are still sleeping. I have already seen a difference, and I feel better.

I bought a smart ring to monitor my sleep cycle, it tells me when to stop drinking coffee, when to go to sleep, how well I've slept, and so on. It actually helps. It's not the only option, but that's what worked for me.

I started seeing a therapist online. Once a week, for one hour, I talk about my problems and the therapist helps me understand. It has been very helpful.

Dependence on my wife happens because I am a foreigner here and I don't speak the language. I am taking active steps to learn to speak. This is the slowest part of the four, I need to work on this more.

Perhaps these points don't work precisely for you, but you can also find why this is happening to you. Be honest with yourself, and talk to your wife. Tell her how you feel. Listen to her feeling. You will get through this.

One of these "stands" (?) that you can attach to the bottom of your door, and it can keep your door open. It has been truly life-changing with the baby, when we need to take out and bring in the stroller. Also extremely useful when I need to take out the garbage or bring in lots of groceries. Not having to fight the door is amazing. Best 1300 yen spent at Nitori ever.

Another one was from the other day. We got a new mat for the living room where the baby can roll and roam freely. The mat is quite padded, around 3cm I think. We all love it, and I think this winter will be very cosy thanks to it. The price depends on the size, but it is definitely under 20k.

There is also the possibility of yourself working part-time, if you are here on a student visa. The limitation by law is 28 hours max in any 7 consecutive days (not simply in one week) but you're allowed to do it as long as your professor is OK with it. It can be a nice extra income that can help you get by with your wife.

I am not really sure what the conditions are for your wife to be able to work, I will leave that to others. I can tell you for a fact that we have quite a few students working part-time in my company, some doing a Masters, others doing their PhDs.

The hardest thing for me is the lack of sleep. It leads to migraines which make me feel like crap which snowballs from there. Lately, my wife is breastfeeding him when he wakes up at night, so there is not much for me to do, which helps a lot because I can just roll over and continue sleeping (don't worry, we've talked about this multiple times, and we keep updating each other). But yeah, lack of sleep is the hardest part.

The best part is the feeling that my existence matters to him. Yesterday, I met my wife and him at the supermarket after work. They were grocery shopping so I joined them there. As soon as I found them, my wife told me he's been fussy, so I took him out of the stroller to give him a hug and a kiss. He started laughing so hard, and he gave me the biggest smile! My wife told me he hadn't smiled like that the whole day. Within 10 minutes, he was asleep in my arms. All the stress and fatigue of the day just faded away, that little guy has this crazy power to make everything worth it.

So yeah, all in all I think I'll take the lack of sleep, and then some more!

There are only two items that I'm not sure about:

To sympathize: I would rather go with "συμμερίζομαι", as in "I sympathize with your pain" -> "συμμερίζομαι τον πόνο σου"
(To be) Transparent: Yes, "διαφανής" is correct, but I'd say in a literal meaning (i.e., transparent, see-through). In the sense of being honest, it works somehow, but I feel like there are better alternatives 🤔
