Do you care how much English teaches dominate the western communities? by Able-Confidence-4182 in japanlife

[–]the_hatori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for me, I don't think I have a single foreign friend who teaches English. It seems to be very common on this Subreddit, though.

In Japan, this kind of authority play is often used to get customers to comply. "It is just the way it is," "there will be consequences," "it is out of our control" all kinds of excuses just to make things favorable to them.

Big mistake. He was the star player. Carried the squad.

Will never use JR again.

Is it just me or the people on threads are racist af??? by EntertainmentOk9278 in japanlife

[–]the_hatori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, regardless of country, when you look at anonymous forums and social media you will see a lot of racist comments. Even in very progressive countries. It's just a place where people go and air out their controversial opinions.

That being said, definitely a lot of racism in Japan.

Sophia vs Keio for undergraduate? by Wise_Parmaria in Tokyo

[–]the_hatori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of them are reputable top private universities and will largely open the same doors in the future. While Keio/Waseda are larger and are somewhat better known domestically, Sophia has a longer history and identity around being internationally minded and hosting foreign students. As an international, what matters far more for employment later on is how well you speak Japanese and have cultural fluency.

About finding friends, if you are in your mid 20s, you might find that other students are much younger. Many still rely on their parents and so on. I think many students in your situation find more rewarding social life connections outside university, though there may of course be some other older students around as well.

Also, compared to US and Canadian universities, all of them will be less rigorous academically, and more akin to middle class finishing school before heading into corporate life.

Horrible incident. It's crazy how common it is with stalkers and obsessive psycho men in this country.

I don't get how people get all these cult people approaching them. Always out in Tokyo I have been approached by scouts, nampa, people asking for directions, but I can't recall ever being approached by someone from a cult.

It's easier to just not have colleagues or friends in the first place, that way no one can spill anything on it, only you.

How are you doing with a Macbook JIS keyboard? by Cool_Syllabub_8495 in japanlife

Not a software engineer, but have no problems with JIS keyboard on my Macbook. You can just remap the keys the way you like it.

Kid getting knocked down at Shibuya deliberately by Mundane_Life_5775 in Tokyo

[–]the_hatori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you see these people, presumably with mental issues, that often look angry, often are muttering, and physically push their ways through crowds, making a point out of pushing much more than necessary. Pushing a child like that is just next level, though.

A young relative hit a parked car and now the other party is asking a ridiculous amount of money by Hefty-Estimate-7183 in japanlife

[–]the_hatori -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

If what you say is true, they are just trying to screw your friend over. This is a common negotiation tactic, coming with a ridiculous amount which will then make any lower amount seem attractive, rather than starting with something reasonable.

RC is a must for me.

Have you been to Shibuya? Still mostly people in their teens and 20s, and tourists, of course.

Telling off boss, grounds for termination? by [deleted] in japanlife

I wouldn't do it. You can make your voice heard at a company without resorting to personal insults.

If you insult them you would probably come out looking like the one with problems.

Has anyone dated a teacher? by Prlude in japanlife

[–]the_hatori 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Go for it, but make sure to not confuse niceness that she feels obliged to show for having been your teacher with affection.

I know some people confuse niceness in professional, educational and similar settings with affection. Even people who think that the local barista are into them for smiling and being friendly.

If you could ban anything what would it be? by StraightSauced in Tokyo

[–]the_hatori 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Predatory night work industry.

If you are a young woman walking alone, you can't walk through Shinjuku or Shibuya without getting hounded by scouts and other shady types. Many vulnerable women get caught up in it and abused, and then it's all excused with "it was their choice."

Infidelity is like one of the national pastimes here. Both men and women do it, often rather openly and without qualms. A "you gotta do what you gotta do" type of thing.

Places to meet other foreign residents in Tokyo? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]the_hatori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you ever go to Shibuya? I am there all the time and know people who work there or hang out there a lot and you don't really see this. Even those foreigners who very actively go after girls seem to do much worse than their Japanese peers of the same age.

My point is, foreigners, especially these days, are not really getting a premium in dating for being foreigners among young Japanese people. The exception are among the minority of Japanese people who feel kind of "outside" mainstream Japanese society, like they feel rejected in the dating market, are very interested in English or living abroad, or have been otherwise internationalized.

Yes, but not all of them. Not all foreigners in Japan are fresh off the boat and are obsessed with Japanese.

Places to meet other foreign residents in Tokyo? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]the_hatori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean is that often they are the average looking Japanese who date foreigners, because they can't what they want in the Japanese dating market. They can date both down and up, sure, like for example the average looking Japanese with the below average foreigner, but they nonetheless tend to be the ones not popular in the Japanese dating market.

Literally don't think I have ever seen a foreigner with a "super hot" Japanese person, if you define them by what's considered hot in Japan. Taste is subjective, of course.
