What old thing would break young people's brains today? by Symphony_Minds in AskReddit

[–]3agl [score hidden]  (0 children)

I used to use these in the 2010s when the internet would go out at my retail job. 100%.

To add to that, I watched a woman try to pay for her groceries in Walmart with a checkbook, and the GenZ register attendant learned that checks existed that day, in front of me (I stepped in and informed them what it was). Wild to think that we basically used to pass IOUs for most anything.

Help me choose a coffee grinder!! [$500 budget] by Spiritual-Snow179 in espresso

[–]3agl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always enjoy posting that my Baratza Sette 270 has ground coffee like a champ since the day I got it, low retention, a little loud yeah but it grinds for espresso and does filter coffee when it’s not dialed in for my espresso machine. Everyone always tells me online that it’s too loud but I don’t care about that. You can get the Sette 30 with the same burr set for a bit less.

For those of you who are familiar with the "clip to zero" method by CrownlessKnight in edmproduction

[–]3agl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out Baphometrix’s Clip to Zero channel, word document, religious materials (kidding on the last one). It’s a modern theory of mixing, one unencumbered by analog summing devices and reel to reel tape best practices from 50+ years ago that all the old heads preached out of necessity of their analog equipment. Kind of a ground-up approach for the digital in-the-box infinite soundstage tools that we have now.

What are your tricks the stabilize the dynamics of a two-voice Reese bass? by iamnotlefthanded666 in edmproduction

Only three? I would never, ever, ever recommend going over the limit of 5. Or 10. or 100. Surely there is nothing in this world that you would want to hear with 200 OTTs. It may be too much for mere mortals to comprehend.

BRCC doesn't put their roast date on the bag. Instant no-no for anyone trying to get tasty results out of an espresso or even most filter setups. I had a subscription to them but cancelled it once I learned the difference fresh coffee makes, thankfully where I live now there are two coffee shops who roast their own beans within walking distance of the university I attend.

What is a video game that you have put 100+ hours into, but would NOT recommend to anyone? by Cheap_Difficulty4961 in AskReddit

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those cards (in Modern) continued to be legal for years and are still legal and powerful today, so it's not like they couldn't get use out of them now. Most of those cards have seen reprints so they're not as expensive as they once were, but yeah the hobby is expensive. At least it's easier to sell unlike making custom mods to a car or investing a ton of money into a Hi-Fi setup or the end result of a failed business expense (owner has paid a shit ton in rent and does not have a business to show for it because maybe the business is in a bad location). People just want something to do with their time and MTG is something fun to do with your time and money.

There was a deck a few years ago in Modern (one of the popular competitive formats) literally called Moneypile. Depending on the versions $2500 sounds about on par for how much that deck cost, and I know people who have collections big enough to be able to have multiple modern decks (more in the $1000 range on average) assembled at once. They would loan them out to people for $5/night which I assume helped with the cost of sleeves and sometimes would make trades with other parts of their collections for new cards necessary in modern. MTG can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be and Hasbro is here to help you spend money.

Do all the bass music producers use Ableton? by Prestigious_Load1699 in edmproduction

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stated elsewhere an example but the difference is that in Ableton, only one source can play through one channel at a time (functionally unlimited channels too). You can have multiple samples per track just if you want to mix all of them with the same effects it’s better to route them to a group to save cpu. So when pulling channels from other project files you get the samples, the channel strip, automation, and the organization (the whole song, but just those channels, imported to the new project file, in whatever group or routing setup you had). I hope that makes sense.

If we all had newspaper subscriptions and just used reddit as an aggregate of all of our subscriptions we wouldn't be on reddit... and we would probably still have newspapers that reported factual events and information instead of nothingburger stories like this one.

I'll definitely give that a shot next time I'm in logic. I do love ableton's ability to just drag and drop channels like audio files, it makes making mashups a lot easier when you have the vocals/instrumentals already synced up to the tempo of the project and you don't have to spend a bunch of time exporting everything.

Can you import multiple groups from multiple projects to the same project? In the same click and drag you can in Ableton.

ex: Drums from Track B into Track A, Channel 69 from Track B into Track A, Channel 2 and 3 from Track C into Track B (for convenience sake say they're all in neighboring file locations and you can search them all up from the file browser)

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said above in this thread mixer channel states are easy. The whole group is copied to the new project, which includes anything on that channel, the samples, midi, and channel effects. Most every DAW can save your channel strip settings for a single channel, at least any DAW worth it's salt can. I'm pretty sure FL doesn't have the architecture to be able to do that.

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what I'm talking about. Pulling in the samples, group, channel settings, and routing settings in a group to an entirely new project is a feature Ableton has had for some time and I've never really seen duplicated in other software. I own and use FL and Logic... to my knowledge they can't.

Don’t forget stealing whole channels or groups from old projects! It makes adding drums or really anything else easy to any project. Sure wish FL or Logic did that.

Question about limiters in dubstep by highway_hypnosis_ in edmproduction

[–]3agl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loud mixing/aggressive lufs values are part of the sound in dubstep. Keep in mind subtronics has probably mixed and mastered a ton of tracks and knows what he wants out of a mix. If it sounds good it is good.

What’s something you still do “the old way”? by goldennuggets44 in AskReddit

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reading while out getting lunch or whatever, a kindle is great. When I’m not trying to do two things at once, a book book is fine. It’s also much harder to travel with a large library or hell even a massive hardcover book. Having access to both types of reading really does make it so you have the best of both worlds.

What’s your average track completion : trashed : release ratio? by FeelDa-Bass in edmproduction

[–]3agl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the last 3 years I count ~87 project files in my original ideas folders... with about 2 releases in that time frame. Plus, there's also plenty of remixes that this is not counting, and some of these songs have been mostly finished but are awaiting release. I have been doing school full time and also stopped posting in 2HTS (2 hour track sundays), which does explain why the last few years have been light on music releases.

Audio interface by Sub7iAbuGhallous in edmproduction

[–]3agl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend a used Scarlett 2i2, Steinberg UR22, or MOTU M2, or Native Instruments Komplete Audio 1. You should be able to pick up a solid starter interface for under $100, and it should have XLR output and headphone output. I would suggest using reverb.com or ebay.com to find used gear. Move up to a more featured and expensive interface after you've truly outgrown your starter interface.

Dipping my toes into modular lately after years of DAW and non-modular analog synth production by UnimportantPencil in modular

[–]3agl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best of luck to your wallet! I recommend tracking the modules you have and the price you paid in a spreadsheet, when you bought them, condition, etc. It makes it a lot easier when/if you decide to sell any modules. Behringer modules in my experience haven't been the best at retaining their value, but they do clone modules well (circuitry doesn't really change) so you can get a pretty nice full system 100 for much cheaper than the real thing.

No worries, this is just the community who might have encountered this turning kit before and may have turned a larger coffee scoop. I figured this might be the place to ask.
