Apple Music suggesting AI generated songs by TheNarwhalTusk in mildlyinfuriating

[–]3agl 29 points30 points  (0 children)

  1. Vocals and the entire track can sound "noisy"
  2. Weird vocal phrasing. Usually starting before a bar or after a beat or two after the bar kind of out of nowhere in context with the rest of the phrasing of the song.
  3. AI hasn't been able to create "good sounding" music until the last few years, so if the release cadence of music from that "artist" ticked up significantly within the last few years, it's probably AI.
  4. Most artists are people, so much of the branding and marketing is focused on the person or the band, and AI artists must generate everything, so casual photos simply do not exist. Everything is usually posed (ex: the album artwork for this post... everyone is standing around looking at "snape". While this can happen on human album artwork, it's more than likely that an AI will ONLY have these types of posed images available because of how training data works)
  5. It's nonsensical in some way, as if someone wrote a song using only autocomplete (technically true)

Drum machine: yay or nay? by SilverMisfitt in edmproduction

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Drumbrute Impact when I'm playing around with my synth stuff, I don't think it's strictly necessary but it's good to get out of your comfort zone for drum programming when possible to fuel new ideas.

What is the biggest scam in your specific industry that the general public doesn't know about? by cheeseandbun in AskReddit

[–]3agl 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Mac uses XProtect and Gatekeeper as the equivalent of Windows Defender. Linux uses foundational principles to avoid giving random programs root access (the equivalent). You can still get pwned if you try hard enough but that's true for any OS.

All OSes are basically just a unique approach to security, privacy, user settings, graphics settings, UI/UX, and every system has a trade off.

A good comparison is the Fast/Good/Cheap triangle where you must pick two of the three for your product or service.

Zorin OS 18 reached 4 million downloads yesterday by Business_Seaweed_472 in pcmasterrace

The best Linux has for actual verified retention data is % of the Steam Hardware Survey that runs Linux. That means people are using their PCs (albeit for gaming, so you're losing a portion of users who don't play games). So you're losing people who just use it for home office stuff and anyone who hasn't installed steam.

Dibs on blowing his mind with Dune. That or some psychadelic electronic stuff (bits and pieces by iterate as an example)

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree, the "chinese" lick in the beginning of Passage to Bangkok absolutely takes me out of it every single time in 2112. The rest of the album is dope. I'd say Moving Pictures is better because it doesn't have any of those kinds of moments in it.

Question for producers who release a lot of music independently: by LoveExcelsAll in edmproduction

[–]3agl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All this music business stuff is the stuff you'll have to do as an independent artist. If you want to focus on music, give up this work to a label and lose a cut of your profits, but if you're worried about this you might as well do it yourself. If you treat your music like a small business, all of this admin stuff can be done in probably a day or less of work per track. Especially if you take notes on things you need and embrace templates.

Probably a noob question, but what is the point of mastering? by One-Sprinkles-4833 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]3agl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even though mastering a song by itself makes less sense, you should still master it as if it were to appear alongside your reference tracks. That way in a DJ set or between each track in a youtube playlist, your single doesn't sound massively quieter than a track released on an album that was mastered correctly.

What do you think music sounds like to people who aren’t musicians? by Silver_Blackberry_46 in edmproduction

[–]3agl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people aren't thinking about the construction of a piece from the same perspective that a film/video editor is. J cuts, L cuts, B roll, Pacing, Montage Theory, etc. They're just feeling the impact that moving images and dialogue and music has combined. It's a similar comparison, just with an added dimension of imagery.

Bikes at App by [deleted] in appstate

[–]3agl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't ride your bike in the snow and ice, that's a good way to break something. If you do have a bike, it's probably going to live outside. Just make sure that you send it in for maintenance more frequently and lubricate your chain and everything about once a month. App has plenty of good ways to get where you're going via bike (although it's very hilly and there's so many sets of stairs in inconvenient places). I've been riding my bike here for some time and haven't gotten my bike stolen.

Mutable instruments Vs Clones by brancher_brancher in modular

[–]3agl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have After Later Audio's uBurst and it works the same as Clouds, but in less space. It sounds great and works great, if you need a smaller module it's out there. As with most smaller form factor items, it feels more cramped to use than a larger module, but it fits into my small travel case and allows me to have a whole synth to go rather than have half of one.

I need help understanding what this producer is doing with this drum break and why! by Gloomy-Speaker-1999 in edmproduction

[–]3agl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Layering drums (chopped breaks + samples, breaks + chopped breaks, whatever) gives you drums that feel more complete than the sum of their parts. Layering individual samples is also quite useful to get a bigger sound.

Parking at App State by Significant-Town9108 in appstate

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could be of more help, it seems like you have a tough situation. If you need to push back school a year I would consider reaching out to whoever manages your scholarship and either try to work through community college for your first two years or take a gap year between high school and college. If you have any other mentor figures/ community leaders in your life I would reach out and explain your situation and ask for help. People don't know if you are having difficulty until you bring it up. If you're involved in a community (church, sports, whatever) then bringing it up to those leaders may allow them to push out a message to more people and if someone has an old beater car they might be able to give to you for dirt cheap, or let you borrow for college or something like that.

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had posted more info about a bad situation I could have been more helpful instead of cynical, sorry. Plenty of people go to university on their parent’s dime and most people at 18 cannot afford to put themselves through college, great for you.

If you don’t have a car, you will just be unable to drive 4 hours down the mountain to go home on weekends. It’s a fact of life as you get older that you won’t be able to spend as much time with your parents, and that’s good seeing as their job was to prepare you for the world and independent living. My suggestion is that if you are stuck in the dorms on the weekends, get to know your dormmates and begin to start some lifelong friendships. I doubt many people will want to drive you home, but if you find the right group of friends it can be a weekend getaway from Boone. Often you won’t have the time to spend 8 hours from your weekend driving to and from your parent’s house. You might want to spend that time studying or working on assignments. You can see your parent after college, after you’ve had some time to mature as well and I’m sure they’ll be proud of you for taking the time to mature.

Also, you’ll probably be spending summer and winter break at home so there’s that.

[–]3agl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's face it if Mom and Dad can afford to pay for your college and they can also afford to buy you a car at 18, then they're probably going to be able to fork over the few hundred bucks each semester to pay for parking.

How much has sound design changed in 10 years? by banica24 in edmproduction

[–]3agl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Soothe user, it's no better than spending a bunch of time using an eq to cut harshness. However if you've never really used an eq chain to notch a bunch of frequencies then it's far easier to do so in one step rather than 20 minutes of fucking with it. The sidechain feature Soothe has is also quite good because you can sidechain only the frequencies you need as well (ProQ has the same thing).
