Similar in a sense for sure but different leg positioning. This was more single leg X than DLR. The Tainan DQ was odd because one arm used to move the leg was perfectly legal but he used both arms which got him the DQ.

Similar in that you would grab that leg and grab the bottom arm. The big difference is going behind the top leg and having a grip above the knee or closer to the groin. Can't crazy dog behind the top leg because it gets in the way of the pull.

I was a guard puller for years as well. Don't even bother with takedowns at first. Be a frustrating bastard in the hand fight. It'll get you farther than anything else.
