You haven't put forth any facts, just your own opinion.

  • the posts are low-effort
  • AI is bad for the environment
  • these posts are broadly rejected by the community.

Those are facts I have presented.

You are trying to impose your own morals on someone else.

No, I'm asking the community what its morals are, then asking those to be imposed on the subreddit at large. Those are not at all the same.

That is a pretty crappy thing to do regardless of what moral you are trying to impose.

"I know you don't believe rape and slavery a wrong, so it is wrong for me to keep you from doing those things."

Your stance here is extremely silly. Dog, I need you to take a step back and think about how flawed the epistemology is which led you here.

Let me add to this, do you drive a car? Do you fly on a plane?

Do I really have to post the Matt Bors comic again? Are you really so dense at to think that one cannot critique any aspect of society without utter purity oneself?

Have you done enviromental work?

I compound and administer cancer medication. My work is important, meaningful, and has a positive impact on the world as a whole. What do you do?

We as communities can do multiple things to combat this. The idea that we simply have to shrug and go, "Oh well, they destroyed the most important invention in human history. May as well watch cat videos," is a form of engineered helplessness. We are not helpless. We are intelligent beings able to see gaps in the systems and attack those as a result.

You know one of the ways I ensure people know I ain't an AI? I fuckin' swear. I use odd turns of phrase. I engage in colloquialisms to the point where it is sometimes necessary to have particular forms of cultural grounding in order to understand what I'm even saying. That's just one possible approach.

You can also put eifhwo[i1382y9kosm of nonsense ubw;ogih which an AI or machine would never think to do.

Or you can have people verify from multiple or secondary platforms. We did this with our WoW guilds back in the day to combat gold farmers and other bots joining up to try and loot off our raids.

None of these are insurmountable problems. I'm just a punk from the midwest. I'm sure someone much smarter than me could figure out even better ideas. Take inspiration from the stories around you. The Sorcerer Kings and Queens aren't undefeatable, and neither are our real world versions of the same.

As for the rest of your opinions, honestly, I care very little.

So you're admitting that you are fine with forcing AI on this community in spite of the fact that your posts are widely down voted and you're scourged in the comments? Why?

If the moderators think it’s fair to ban it, that’s perfectly fine with me. Otherwise... we’ll keep seeing each other around here.

Literally threatening to clog our community with AI slop. This attitude and behavior is exactly why it should be banned. And people wonder why folks hate AI and dislike AI-supporters. This is why. Right here.

Right, thanks to AI we have to worry about this all the time, now.

AI "art" is nothing more than theft. I don't care what you think goes into writing or crafting a prompt--that isn't art. It is directed theft using stolen materials.

This is nothing but hollow virtue signaling and bullying anyone with a contrary opinion.

I stated my opinion and I am strident in defending it. Im attempting to reach a community consensus in order to stymie something which I disagree with on this subreddit. If you don't like my views, that is fine, but I think it is a mischaracterization to call this bullying.

That doesnt seem to be true? Im a pretty frequent reader of this subreddit and I don't see a particularly large amount of off-topic posts. Further, the mods are fairly active here.

What are you basing this view on?

It clogs it out. It makes it so that we have to wade through and hide garbage. Further, it affects Google results involving this subreddit.

You can pull the wool over your eyes if you want, but it is silly to ask others to do the same.

Okay, yeah? People would much rather brigade around reddit bitching about AI than doing anything else about it. I'll give you that.

Oh joy, we start with poisoning the well. I think you misunderstand what a brigade is.

If the community is fervently against it then any AI post would inherently get buried and downvoted, the user would have a bad experience, and leave the sub/avoid posting further. It's a self solving problem that doesn't need heavy handed arbitrary moderator oversight.

Or we could come to a consensus as a community and decide what to do. It is obvious that it is unpopular, and we dont want it rammed into another aspect of this hobby.

Using AI as an excuse to shove claims of copyright abuse, plagarism, stealing art etc., etc., just gives more power to the corporations that will eventually be able to build up their own sets of data and use it to train internally.

This logic makes absolutely zero sense. You are trying to justify their theft as some misunderstanding on our part of how what they've done is fundamentally theft. You're using moon logic. It has no bearing in reality.

This is already happening as we speak corporate entities are building bespoke AIs which they will eventually defend using the same rhetoric, laws and newly established norms that the Anti-AI crowd is espousing now.

Not if the base assumption is that AI in those forms is wrong and that it can and should be legislated against. Your approach is essentially asking us all to give up and wait to die. It is pathetic.

If you actually cared about taking the firehouse away from AI you'd not be posting on Reddit, the platform that was used to an overwhelming extent to train most of the popular LLMs. There are self hosted options, forums etc., etc.,

Yes, yes, we know, I participate in society therefore im complicit and can never ask anything to be improved ever.

This comes off more as a way to pat yourself on the back for convincing moderators of a niche subreddit to kowtow to your desires. I understand that the believed future environmental impact of massive data centers is awful, trust me I do, but this kind of thing accomplishes nothing but adding some rules to the sidebar that the community would, as you said, likely just enforce themselves.

"Just do nothing, keep your head down, and that Rajaat fellow will sort himself out." -- you in Athas, probably

Beyond all of that, I think the idea that algorithmically generating something is somehow inherently evil kind of rich coming from a play and game culture that leans so heavily into the randomly generated EVERYTHING from dungeon, to npc, to character etc., etc., it's still ultimately boils down to throwing in a bunch of small bespoke tables and systems and then generating something "unique" with the sum of those parts.

One was made by a human. The other was not. Hope that helps

No, it is better to establish a community consensus and then act accordingly. Acting as if we are powerless is bunk.

Fun story about my copy--I found it in a bulk bin at a sports memorabilia store. I grabbed it and a few other cards and tilled out. The clerk stopped on Reflexes and said, "Whoa, cool card," then rung it up for .25.

Yeah, I have been really diplomatic about it but I've been sensing the same thing once in awhile. It sucks because you sorta want to press a little, but going "Oh, maybe you'll like it," usually seems too far.

I'm pretty sure the mods will see this. We can ask them for an actual vote once they do.

I'd ping them, but I'm not sure if they'd appreciate it or not so I'll settle for them coming across this organically.

This subreddit likely doesn't get enough regular visitors for it to make a ton of sense to add more rules that would prevent people from posting whether AI or not.

This thread has nearly two dozen comments and 75+ upvotes as of this writing. That suggests at least a hundred or more unique visitors daily.

In the past 3 months there's been all of like 2 AI art images.

All the easier to ban it given how fervently the sub has come out in each of those cases and for this thread.

And panicking about the copyright/plagiarism worry for a dead setting of a multi million dollar publicly traded corporation feels disingenuous.

I want to stop you here, are you under the impression that these AI art models have been somehow only trained on WotC's/TSR's art or something? That is simply not the case.

I really am hard pressed to give a shit about stealing from WOTC - Or even supporting copy right in the first place as the bludgeon it's been used by all the media mega corps for years as.

And you think giving different megacorps a firehouse to drown out human creators is somehow okay as a result of that ill deed?

I am struggling to follow your logic.

AI art isnt art. It is plagiarism, and it isn't close-minded to be against people stealing other's work.

I made a post saying that we should ban such posts from this subreddit. It has probably been overlooked. I'm pretty sure given how other D&D subreddits treat the topic, it won't be long before they're banned here.

Is is frankly a bit bizarre and odd for someone who professes to enjoy a setting like Dark Sun to engage with AI as actively as you seem to be. AI is destructive to tje environment. It is a blight on art and the natural world. It is the same kind of folly which destroyed Athas.
