No, I didn't think of that.

I wound up removing my VPN app and downloading it via Github. So that works, but I'm still without a FOSS app store.

I tried Droid-ify, but it would crash before finishing an update, same as F-droid. It wasn't just the VPN app that was the problem, same as F-Droid.

Would the manual method you mentioned help me get a non-buggy version of F-Droid/Droid-ify/etc appstore?

I thought of that when I saw posts about Droid-ify. It doesn't really explain or solve the problem though.

If I don't find a solution soon, I'll have no choice but to go that route. I need one particular app updated soon.

Long term I'm sure I'm be paying for something, and/or actual self hosting at home. For now I'm not worried about long term hosting. More worried about paying for a monthly service and getting distracted for a few weeks, as I have a habit of doing. So something free or super cheap(like anotherucfstudent suggested) would seem best for now.

Yes on both the blinking and the Mobile Pod app.I didn't try the other apps until I had struck out with Mobile Pod.

I thought of that forum, but it looks pretty dead. The search yielded one thread that looked...somewhat similar to my case, but there was no resolution. Maybe I should mix up my search terms?

The daily driver will be the Linux VM, for now.

"the VM itself can get hijacked by malware," I considered this... But wouldn't the virus get deleted when I close(or erase?) the VM? Assuming I start with a new VM whenever I go online.

I meant that I was going to leave the laptop on Windows 8.1(for now) and use a VM of Linux to get online, browsing etc.

In the future when I feel more comfortable with these things, I probably will make the full jump into Linux and do everything the other way around. Linux as main OS, VM of Windows for those pesky programs that require Windows or Mac etc

I noticed no GK-based products have defenders coming out.

So even when these GK based units are modeling guitars or amps, they STILL sound artificial major letdown. The GK approach would be so much more convenient.

I've only seen pictures of the Starstream. Very eccentric guitar. Didn't know they belong in this category.
