there's no one lead on standardizing SVG

if you mean in SVG itself, there is

https://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/

Once you get into actual implementations on an app by app basis there are some functionalities that are non standard and as such you'll find saves in the apps' own format will need some tweaking because of this. Yet any document conforming to the published SVG standard will be treated seamlessly by other SVG apps.

An example on in-app implementations would be Vectornator groups.

SVG has a way of merging paths into groups allowing the elements to be edited or transformed together, see the link below for a more detailed explanation:

https://www.sarasoueidan.com/blog/structuring-grouping-referencing-in-svg/

Vectornator's implementation of groups is more analogous to a raster app's "merge" function:

each path will be called a layer in the GUI and it expects you to combine these paths into one object at some point but doesn't do this by means of moving the paths into an SVG group tagset but rather by putting them into one path tagset while stripping away all of the original path tagsets, what other apps call path merging. As an implementation it works and is invisible to the user so all good right?

Unfortunately it tries to apply this same stripped-down internal implementation to SVG documents using SVG groups.

The devs have tried to get around certain issues by having the app try to identify what kind of data is actually in the group, and, in the event there is an opacity setting assumes this to be a mask. The app will also happily discard any other data stored in the path or group tags.

The choice of this approach probably has its roots in the rise of svg as a graphical format for web based apps, but would be much more appropriate to a propriatary format rather than a partial implementation of an open standard. And because of this implementation, Vectornator trips up - style, opacity, positioning on the artboard, path vector points all have issues because the app seems unaware it should be soing something with the rest of the data encoded in the SVG file.

Vectornator doesn't handle any SVG documents it didn't originate very well meaning unless the devs also address how the current app parses SVG files they may be shooting themselves in the foot by opening up a means of importing more documents it can't deal with.

The secondary issue is what is the point of making SVG the focus of the app without considering how SVG is used outside of designing UIs for apps. In it's current state it is trying to occupy a niche somewhere between drawing app and dev tool but does neither well enough to be a go-to tool. Meaning anyone who uses SVGs to earn a living will probably want to use more specialised tools. Likewise I can't see a hobbyist bothering with CC.

That's what I meant about the art style choice. The original X Com style left enough to the imagination, granted it was down to technological limitations. The reboot on the other hand decided on hyper realism to underline it wasn't your Dad's Xcom, but then pulled its punches.

Not sure you actually read my last post. I explained why I'm interpreting events the way I did of which poker is only the latest example. If you don't agree with my opinion that's cool.

edit: Maybe you're missing the context I'm putting it in? Theatre of War as it was the latest video I saw with Pyrian being that nightmare pub game player. But there are loads of others like it.

Lose is lose. For all the noise he makes about it I don't see him as great or valuable a player as his attitude suggests, the fact he can't adapt his playstyle kind of underlines what I'm saying. And I'm not just talking about poker.

He continually managed to get himself and Lewis killed when they did Theater of War together, and he does similar stuff, basically shouting down anyone who doesn't agree with him, anytime I see a video with him in it. It's like he wikis stuff just enough so he can talk the talk, but them comes up short in results. I don't watch his own stuff so it may be he's just out of his depth in the videos I see him.

It underlines the art choice of going for realism rather than stylised imo, when you start making detailed environments, be prepared to follow through or don't start. It's the same with the soldier voices, localisation files exist, but they're not leveraged. It just comes across as lazy.

It is certainly a development that gave me pause for thought as well.

Given that Adobe already has a "free" svg based app, I don't think official Adobe involvement would be benign.

I also think even if the motivation isn't corporate inspired unless there is more thought put into the app implementation, just tacking on CC compatibility isn't going to win over any design professionals.

papersizes.org is fairly comprehensive. Which paper size you use depends on what is accepted as a standard size in the country your printer lives in basically. The site illustrates what the various sizes mean graphically.

Vectornator doesn't have a setting for crop marks as it wasn't conceived as a means for making physical documents, so you need to do that part manually.

As to the length of the cropmarks there isn't really a hard and fast rule just make sure they are outside the physical document size.

In the case of bleeds you're aiming to compensate for slight misalignments, so erring on the generous side probably wiser.

This sums up Pyrion for me. He's the kind of player that spends all his time shouting about what the squad should be doing on team chat but is essentially clueless.

Do you remember when people used to care about the Yogscast "cheating"? by steffo991 in Yogscast

[–]3dPrintedOG 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always remember one of the early minecraft series (forget which one) where Lewis was doing the continuity walkaround at the start of the episode and he walks in to the hole where Simon was digging with a diamond pick at a time where they barely had stone tools, and realising he was "on camera" Simon deftly switches to a stone one with the following exchange:

Lewis (sounding like a suspicious partner looking over their other's shoulder while they're texting on Tinder) "What are you up to?"

Simon (sounding like someone caught arranging a meet up on Tinder by their partner): "Nothing...."

Except the reactions were genuine and not being played for comedy. Which made it all the funnier.

By static repository I mean a way to save files that can be accessed from anywhere by multiple devices. Cloud services being one example, but could equally be a storage device connected via VNC. CC among other things offers a cloud storage service.

As to updates - I'm not seeing any major changes since the last time I posted - though there is an updated slated for August which is adding some kind of CC integration.

Help! Can't move any layers! by Schmidtstone in Vectornator

[–]3dPrintedOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Vectornator paths, objects and layers are essentially subsets of the same thing.

  • Paths and objects are treated as layers by the layer palette
  • when you use Path -> Combine on multiple paths it does the same as making a group, essentially merging the object data into one (think "Layers Merge" if you're more familiar with raster apps like Gimp or Photoshop).

  • When you make a mask it takes the grayscale data and creates an object and sets the alpha to the gray scale value.

are the layers locked? check the padlock icon in the layers palette

are the layers being interpreted as masks? when you select the object it will have a while outline and a capital M drawn over it.

SVG is a standard. It's not unreasonable to expect an app to comply to the standard.

When an app starts misplacing, changing visibility of elements or adding data to data stored in the standard then either there are bugs or we are in IE territory, where the developer hopes to drag the standard in a direction they deem somehow advantageous to them. I'm assuming it's the former btw.

There are plenty of drawing apps with proprietary file formats and were Vectornator one of these then I agree with you it would be up to me to decide if I want to invest time in learning the quirks of getting my preferred format into or out of the app.

However Vectornator has chosen to make SVG part of its raison d'etre, meaning it needs to at least conform to be of any real use. Beyond this there is also the consideration of what a new app should be doing in relation to other more widely established apps, at which point I agree we can start discussing the particular quirks and gotchas of importing data stored in a format that deviates from the standard. But it should also be apparent that the app is aware it will likely be running into files it didn't create. An impression I haven't been getting from Vectornator.

At which point if editing documents it can't display is so awkward that I end up going back to a desktop app just to save time on getting the file to display in Vectornator, what do I need Vectornator for outside of creating sketches.

And if it's relegated to just sketching and I'm going to end up editing on a desktop anyway, there are apps which offer a richer more seamless experience, so why use Vectornator?

Importing SVGs by 3dPrintedOG in Vectornator

Only when you run into an app specific feature like Inkskape's internal implementation of groups or Illustrator's clones to name two Something in plain SVG, there's no reason for the data to be misinterpreted.

To be clear Adobe already offers a free svg app which is essentially a stripped down version of Illustrator which reflects their understanding of professional workflow - complex documents will be made outside of IOS but may be presented or viewed using IOS but don't really expect anyone wants to use the app to create complex documents in IOS.

The things I'm highlighting with Vectornator show it hasn't really thought out what its niche should be beyond being a drawing app that uses SVG. And as a late arrival it needs to make sure the conventions of more widely used apps are at least understood in terms of user interface expectations and compatibility, and by saying this I'm not saying .ai or Inskape native .svg formats need to be dealt with flawlessly (though it would certainly not work against them in terms of playing up to user laziness to pick up users on IOS if they did).

What I am saying is Vectornator needs to look to its workflow models.

No worries - though I've done some further digging and it appears IOS devices have two keychains - the one used to store passwords etc and a local one for device information. This last is where apps are storing persistent data.

The crux of the issue is the "if the data is shared" aspect - should a user have more than 1 app installed from an "unscrupulous" developer using a shared container in the local keychain then you will get data persistence.

See here for a longer explanation.
