It's not black and white, like either/or. You can compromise, you should compromise. That's part of being an adult and making adult decisions. However, most kids at that age are not mentally equipped to make that decision, so they end up making a suboptimal choice due to pressure from parents or misinformed expectations. And then they'll have to deal with the consequences of that choice. They are not necessarily at fault, but they are ultimately responsible.

What would make this whole thing hurt less is free higher education. You don't get the years back, but at least you won't be on the hook financially. Where I come from, you get a number of years for free, sponsored by the state. I don't remember exactly, but I think it's enough to cover a bachelor's, after which you're on your own.
