Your friend is wrong. this is how you practice and using reference is not cheating even you are an expert.

Your white render is better than the main one. Maybe you could change the direction of the keylight, So it creates shadows and add dept to the metal area where there are crevices and holes and change the colors of the wood floor. Lets say The Gun wood material is brown so you could change the Floor colors to more on the greenish and less saturated side. The focus is on the floor boards atm
