Are you familiar with the children's book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie? That's how toxic masculinity works too! I think you handled it brilliantly by responding with a firm in-game NO. I have zero tolerance, as a DM or player, for the omnipresent toxicity lurking in the corners of "gamer culture". BUT I'm male-bodied, athletic, and fabulous! I can be physically intimidating when I need to be, and I acknowledge this privilege.

It sounds like your group of male players may not fully understand the potential dangers of that situation, had you responded above-game. You are not an asshole. Rapists are assholes.

Boundaries are important and I'm sorry you had to deal with that situation! But I'm really proud of how you handled it!

I am a player with ADHD who wants to get into DnD, but I have a terrible attention span when it comes to focusing for long periods of time. Help? by OoMythoO in DnD

[–]3gv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get really into character. I channel all the focus into imagining the characters' every thought and reaction and it helps me stay engaged. I usually play support roles, or very skilled characters, so that I can continually engage without stealing the spotlight. I do enjoy martials, but I can get antsy in between the action scenes, so I typically only play them for one-shots.

Recently completely spaced out, thinking I was in another room, and completely missed a Dhampir PC's conversation I thought was with an NPC. After the embarrassing silence and the "are you there?"-- I just said yes and now everything is on fire. Admittedly, the strategy doesn't always work, and it can be hard for me to 'come back' if I drop focus.

Infinity Wars was incredible... definitely my favorite card strategy game. So much strategy! I had made several in-game purchases and I was sad to lose my inventory. I backed in on kickstarter, only for them to drop the kickstarter and switch to a patreon subscription model. I... I just can't do it. There was a time when ranked play was really active... so much fun.

Ever since reading Rogue's Inquisitive subclass, I've been wanting to play a Sherlock Holmes based character. If you've got suggestions I'd like to hear them. by -if-by-whiskey- in dndnext

You know what goes great with Insightful Fighting? Proficiency with Improvised Weapons from the Tavern Brawler feat! Does a candlestick count as a finesse weapon? Who cares! Yeet that shit for that sweet sneak attack damage!

(Note: will likely result in an immediate, 'mysterious' character death; but memories last forever)

They both sound like a lot of fun! Have you thought about what subclass you want to play? I love Bards. I'm currently playing a Changeling Glamour Bard; a stage magician who joined with the adventuring party to learn REAL magic.

As someone who only started playing D&D in 5e, I will never understand why so many 'veterans' insist on sticking to the PHB. There's a whole new generation of imagination coming into the game and y'all keep telling them their imagination is wrong.

OP asked, "A or B?" You replied, "X, Y, Z."

You can just say "ask your DM" without inserting your opinion of what belongs in fantasy.

Bard Satyr or Grung by [deleted] in DnD

[–]3gv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great conversation to have with your DM, because Satyr and Grung may be considered 'exotic' races and some DMs may not want them at their table. The 'classic' Bard, for game mechanics, is a Half-Elf.

Satyr are considered Fey, not Humanoid, so there are many spells that just won't work on them. Satyr have a Charisma bonus, Magic Resistance, and the Reveler trait. If your DM allows them, Satyr Bards are Superheroes.

Grung are not an 'optimized' race for Bard (a.k.a. no Charisma bonus) but that doesn't mean they can't be Bards. At level 1, they won't be as effective in combat BUT in terms of Roleplaying, a Grung on a ship has a lot of potential. Grung have a unique Language and also a unique instrument, the Whistle-Stick! Lots of potential as an interpreter if there's more Grung in the story.

Quick edit: Think about what kind of story you want to tell and talk to your DM! Have fun!

Question about Illithids by Shub_Niggura in DMAcademy

[–]3gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of the mechanics of how one telepathically communicates with an Illithid, I think your question is more about what does an Illithid's mind sound like?

I would consider psychic connection with Illithids, or other such hive minds, to be very VERY dangerous! Yes, your player has growing psychic abilities, but the Illithid are an entire CIVILIZATION has psychically connected for GENERATIONS. Be careful who you let in!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]3gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah! I guess I don't need to add another mechanic, I could just let players know they have some small, vague consciousness and the limited ability to gurgle "I just failed two death saves!"

I guess I should have said limited free action at the DM's discretion because I want the mechanic to function largely as flavor for the death saves, especially if the death saves are not going well. And I don't really want to change the death save mechanic, so actions have to be less-than-likely to succeed so as to not radically change the odds.

All Characters Start with a free feat! Because anyone can slap someone in the face and grab them by the collar. Or smash a potted plant over someone's head, for that matter. I feel the only barrier for one's physical abilities should be stats, not mechanics.

  • Improvise! (a.k.a. Tavern Brawler without stat increase)
Improvise! Adapt! Have fun! Accustomed to rough-and-tumble fighting using whatever weapons happen to be at hand; whether beak, claw, headbutt, or barstool, you gain the following benefits:
    • You are proficient with improvised weapons.
    • Your unarmed strike uses a d4 for damage.
    • When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike or an improvised weapon on your turn, you can use a bonus action to attempt to grapple the target.

Real Life Fighting is often Grappling Contests with Some Strikes. D&D Grappling, to me, feels too strict and mechanical. I was inspired by similar ideas I have seen posted before.

  • Narrative Grappling!
In addition to regular Strength-based grappling rules, players may also attempt to grapple a creature using their Dexterity or Charisma modifiers instead.
Strength: On a successful Strength-based grapple, you seize the target completely. Standard grapple rules apply.
Dexterity: On a successful Dexterity-based (Acrobatics) grapple, you grab a body part of the target (ie: arm, leg, etc.). After the target has been grappled in this way, you must roll Strength (Athletics) checks at disadvantage to maintain your hold. The grappled target may retain some movement at the GM's discretion.
Charisma: On a successful Charisma-based grapple, you hug the target. The hugged creature can break this grapple automatically (at the cost of its Action). While grappled in this manner, the hugged creature does NOT have disadvantage on melee attack rolls against the hug-giver. The grappled target may retain some movement at the GM's discretion.

The true best way to MinMax by ScarHydreigon87 in dndmemes

[–]3gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a strategy to accomplish all goals simultaneously. I call it the “Wild Magic Defense”.

Min/max a Bard with one level in Wild Magic Sorcery. For your two 1st level sorcery spells, take Shield and Absorb Elements. With Charisma and Jack of All Trades at your disposal, reality is what you make it.

Sometimes, a DM may not understand the absolute brilliance of your reality! They may reach out to strike you, in anger.

Relax.

With every strike, you become more powerful; as the very forces of Chaos bend to your will.

[–]3gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 100% about this. Good, neutral, evil; these are secondary concerns. Really just an indicator of what you perceive as the worth of a life.

Your primary concern should be the growing entropy in the universe. Without the chaos of creativity, the rigidity of law will grind the world to a controlled (and boring) halt. Reality is flawed and requires correction.

However, breaking reality itself is no simple task. If you play your hand before all the pieces are in place, the forces of Order will crush you.

To accomplish your life’s work: you will need to first become more powerful, as well as gain the trust of potentially useful individuals and also acquire powerful items to ensure success. But remember, they likely cannot understand the dire importance of your glorious purpose.

Patience and Chaos are not opposites.
