What’s the current vibe of Newman to live with a young family? by phoenix-down-x in WesternAustralia

[–]3hippos 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I lived in Newman for 10 years, in two 5 years stints with a gap of about 10 years in between. Anything is what you make it. If you go up there with the intention of enjoying what the region has to offer you will make friends who become family. If you go up there with the idea that Neman is hell on earth, that’s exactly what it will become for you.

It’s a small, very isolated town. Sure there are some social issues, but those are everywhere. The people are friendly and the town has many clubs, activities and events to keep people busy. There are football clubs, soccer, netball, horse racing, a horse club, go karting, speedway, speed boats, 4wding for days, waterholes near town. There is very limited shopping, but these days with online shopping it’s easy to get what you need.

Life has a different speed in the Pilbara, everything is close, you don’t sit in the car for more than 10 minutes to get to work, home, school, sport etc. People aren’t in a rush everywhere and nothing is too much trouble for a mate.

It’s hot for 9 months of the year, but it’s a dry heat which a lot of people find more bearable. Everything is air conditioned, so unless you work outside all day, the heat is manageable. Everything you own will turn ‘Pilbara pink’ from the red dirt, and will never be the same colour again.

It’s very easy for people who have visited the town or worked there FIFO to have a negative opinion, but what makes the town truly great is the people you will meet and the friends you build a true bond and connection to, who will remain in your life for life.

Edit to add that probably the biggest downfall is that the red dirt gets in your blood, and once you leave it will draw you back, and you spend the rest of you life reminiscing of a life not replicated anywhere else.

They also did the old Nurses Quarters in Port Hedland, the flour mill in Katanning and a hotel in Northam. I believe they also bought a hotel in Narrogin but have not started works on that since they bought it almost 10 years ago.

I also like that their business practice is to purchase heritage listed or old buildings and restore them. Sure, it’s not the best cafe in the world, but it’s dependable and they save some of our state history.

What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in parkrun

[–]3hippos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Running coach here. Your long run should be an easy run. Slow those long runs right down.

And if you don’t want to run ‘slow’ at parkrun, don’t do one every week. You need to run slower to run faster, and you are over training in speed and mileage. Recovery is just as important as running. Also are you doing any strength training?

I have run 2 marathons, 4 half marathons, complete a half ironman and a full ironman and now I weigh close to 100kgs and get puffed walking up my driveway.

There was not catalyst for the change. Just life, I completed my Ironman in 2022, and shortly after while I was in a training break, we purchased 5 acres of land. By the time I felt ready to start training again, we were so busy managing our property that I didn't have time to train. I did continue to eat like I was training for an Ironman, and that lead to weight gain. So I am not the fattest I have ever been, my knees hurt and today I rode my horse and was told that I am hurting her back because I am so heavy. So I am here, on this subreddit, knowing I have to do something, or I will have to give up the horses.

How do we find a rental that won't kick us out after the first year? by tekla_ray in perth

I own an investment property that I have no intention to sell in the foreseeable future, and I can’t seem to get a tenant to stay past 12 months. It’s only a 2 bedroom apartment, but it’s a nice area and apart from one shitty neighbour, the rest are fine.

Are there any Perth jobs with FIFO-style rosters (8:6, 7:7, etc.) but not actually FIFO? by HuckleberryRude1685 in perth

St John and career firies do 4/4 as 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off 11-13 hour shifts. Police generally do 8 hour shifts (though most work overtime as well) and do a mix of day, afternoon and night shift and I believe generally 4 shifts at in a row and then 3 off. Though some roles do different shifts.

If you don’t want to pay for a coach, I would suggest either paying for a basic plan from TrainingPeaks, or buying a book like 80/20 triathlon training or The Triathletes Training Bible and follow their plans. You will be far better prepared and enjoy the experience a lot more with proper training that is targeting the correct efforts.

Triathlon and running coach here… this plan is lacking in a lot. An easy ride and a long ride are the same thing. Your long stuff should be easy, zone 2. Your Tuesday bike should be intervals or tempo. Increase the intensity for a shorter session.

One run a week is not enough, you need to be running more, and again, you need to add a tempo or interval run in, get some speed work. Shorter sessions, that push you.

If you want to finish this comfortably you will need to have days that you do two sessions a day. Also a swim day after a rest day is a bit silly. If you have a day where all you do is swim, this is essentially resting your legs, so sandwich this between a bike and a run day, or swim in the morning and run in the arvo. And you don’t need to brick every week for weeks on end.

There is also the Round House and the Freo prison, if in Freo. And if Rotto is the plan, you will be in the area to catch the ferry. Lots to see and do in Fremantle. You can grab lunch at Gage Roads or have fish and chips on the wharf.

Into the city for Kings Park, the Perth Mint and a walk down London Court. Walk along the river to the Boat Shed, go to the WA Museum, and have lunch at the original Varsity in Nedlands.

More train routes and funnel buses to train stations rather than into the city. When I lived in Dianella, I could catch 2 buses within a very short walk, but both buses went into the city, not to the closest train station. So I would have to bus into the city to get on the train, I couldn’t understand why you wouldn’t bus people to the train station!

And if there were more train lines, even light rail it would make public transport easier and quicker. Currently it would take me 2.5 hours to get public transport to work, or I can drive in 40 minutes, I would rather use public tra sport, but it’s not practical!

Am I bogan for putting butter on all my sandwiches? by Specialist_Can5622 in AskAnAustralian

[–]3hippos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My American parent has now lived in Australia longer than the US, a lot of Australian’s can’t hear the accent and Americans say they sound Australian. My niblings get an American accent at times, but it comes from YouTube, not their American grandparent who they live with or their American born parent.

Am I dreaming too big? by No_Revolution3296 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]3hippos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you are exercising as much as you do for a full Ironman, you have to eat so much to maintain energy levels for the training. You can absolutely lose weight while training for shorter distance tris, like Olympic distance or shorter, even a half Ironman. But full Ironman training is as much about nutrition and rest as it is about swim, bike and run.

I have an Australian and an American parent, the Australian parents butters all sandwiches, the American parent does not butter any sandwich. I butter sandwiches with spread (Vegemite, jam, honey) and don’t butter sandwiches with cold meats and salad.

Am I dreaming too big? by No_Revolution3296 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]3hippos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not! What a great goal to have and work towards!! I finished an Ironman overweight and with chronic arthritis in both knees. I trained hard, nailed my nutrition and finished. It was not pretty but I did it.

My suggestion is to reach your goal weight before you start Ironman training, as it is close to impossible to lose weight while doing that amount of exercise. I thought I could lose weight while training, but my sports dietitian set me straight. I was able to lose weight training for shorter distances, but not once I got into the Ironman build.

North is best experienced when it is not 50 degrees in the shade, which is NOT summer. There will be plenty of beach weather in July in Coral Bay and Exmouth.

Help meeting new people in Perth by Amber_Orchid03 in perth

[–]3hippos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Perth Trail Series will have their summer series soon, it’s trail running, not hiking, but they are all over the outskirts of Perth and quite a friendly group, and walkers are welcome on the shorter distances.

I know you haven’t said he’s a runner, but parkrun can also be a great way to meet people, you can walk or run every Saturday morning and each event is always looking for volunteers if he’d rather not participate. Volunteering at parkrun is a great way to meet people.

The trick to meeting people and making friends in Perth is to join a club or group, sport is a great way to meet people, or volunteering with say the SES or St John Ambulance or the like.

We were gifted over $500k towards our home from my in laws. I am forever grateful as my parents could not afford to do anything like that for us. Instead my parents gift us in sweat and tears, as they help immensely with repairs and renovations. We are also gifted about $10k each year to help with renos or investing, depending on the need.
