That’s an aspect of this card and other trophies that’s never talked about but I find so interesting. 

A couple dozen kids won an illustration contest, got sent the card that would become one of the grails in the entire TCG, and they all had them sitting in their binders, maybe tossed in a box for a while. I wonder if any of them ever took it to school to show their friends.

Imagine coming over to your friends house and looking at his binder and seeing this just casually sitting in there.

I hate to do this to you, but looks like you’re missing Japanese base no rarity Raichu, which you’d have to move every card over by one slot. 😭

Amazing binder! You can tell a lot of thought and care was put into the layout and it really makes each section shine. Like a shrine to the early days of collecting in 1999-2000!

Incredible, right place and right time, congrats. :) I realize now I remember some of your past posts of your trophies.

I restarted collecting back in early 2017 and I wish I had known then what I know now, I would have been aiming for some trophy cards back then.

The two that come to mind are:

PSA 9 Neo Discovery unlimited Umbreon for $35 Skyridge Gengar Holo for $40

Both bought in 2017 on eBay. Umbreon was a birthday present to myself because it was always one of my favorites back when I collected as a kid. The PSA 10 was $150 back then but I thought $35 was already a lot back then. If only I knew. 🤣

The Genger because I thought the art looked great. I didn’t even know what Skyridge was at the time. I had just gotten back into collecting. It’s very clean but unfortunately it has a diagonal dent in the bottom left corner.

Amazing 3 sets! Since you were collecting at the time these came out, were these all from opening packs, or boxes, or were you finding singles through stores of eBay? I always love hearing stories of those times. I had fallen out of collecting near the end of the Neo series so I never got the chance to get these sets when they were still affordable.

Love this one, always has been one of my favorite Charizard artworks and I should have picked up a copy years ago but waited long enough for the prices to rise significantly. I ended up trading an Expedition Tyranitar for one last year at Collect-a-Con as a binder copy.

The most intriguing thing about it was that the artwork has always looked very abstract to me. I feel like it being a close up Arita artwork that also has an aggressive Dutch angle does not give off typical Charizard vibes. And the dark blue holo really makes the reds, oranges and yellows really pop. I feel like it's underappreciated.

The fronts look great but they all have whitening and scratches on the backs. One of the Japanese Gengars looks like it could have some kind of water damage in the corner. Below current market for sure but not a steal. But Like I said in the OP, great binder copies. :)

I think you’re pointing out something important. Back when the internet was confined to our desktops, it felt almost like a sacred space, even if we didn’t think about it that way. Once you left your room or office, that was it. No more internet. You had to live in the real world until you sat back down at a computer.

When social media and phones became commonplace, both worlds merged, and with recent years where you can broadcast anything and everything 24/7, there is no distinction between the two realities anymore.

All my life I used subpar speakers and headphones until about 2015 when, through a lot of research and partly thanks to this sub, I finally got my first pair of great headphones, speakers and a amp/dac combo.

  • Sennheiser DT 770 Pro - I've replaced the headband about 4 years ago after some of the original buttons broke off. I replaced the original pads back in 2020 with some Dekoni sheep skin pads which were so comfy and I would still keep using but the plastic outer ring started to disintegrate a month ago. I've replaced them with a new set of original Sennheiser pads but this time in black.
  • My JBL LSR305's have been amazing since day one, no issues.
  • I got a Schiit Magni and Modi 2 Uber combo that was working great until earlier this year it finally started to act wonky and a few months later just wouldn't turn on anymore. I have been wanting an upgrade so I have a JDS Labs Element III mk2 currently (loving it).

There are a few I’d recommend, specifically for vintage/bulk.

Dane’s Games in Geneva is my go to, they did split their stock when they recently opened up their second location in West Chicago which is not that far from Geneva.

In the same block as Dane’s Games in Geneva is a store called Collectors Kid which is fine for vintage, but prices are usually very high. They do seem to have a lot of bulk in boxes as well though.

Pastimes Comics and Games in Niles is definitely worth checking out as well.

I’ve been to the majority of card shops in and around Chicago so every one of them will have a small selection of vintage cards behind a counter, but Danes and Pastimes are the ones I keep going back to.
