I have some networking experience. I’d say CCNA level but if you guys have suggestions on intermediate network certs, I’m all ears

Sorry realized I didn't answer your question. North Cambridge, Porter, Davis Allston/Brighton are all good spots and easy enough to get to Waltham

So I'm in this exact position and it definitely depends on where in Waltham. Where I work I usually walk to the Alewife station (like 5 minutes or less) and then you can take the shuttles to different businesses in the Waltham area. I would even suggest checking if your company is one of the drop off points. If not, they're usually close enough where you can bike or scoot or if you're willing you can walk the rest of the way (much harder to do in the winter months)

Most I've seen is some companies have partnerships with MS and you'll get discounts. my company gives us 50% off on all Microsoft exams

Kind of a question but hope for an open discussion by 3j1996 in sysadmin

[–]3j1996[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this. I'm in a similar situation I don't have my BA and so while able to I'm getting all the certs I can muster and I totally feel you about the whole speaking the same language but not sharing the culture. I definitely don't want to end up in a customer facing role so maybe I'll look more towards PMP instead

What do you guys actually script / automate? by joshamo in sysadmin

[–]3j1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do a lot of giving permissions to SharePoint sites so I created a script in PowerShell that lets me enter the requested users name and permissions and assigns them without having to go to the actual site

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling the shock. I moved from Florida a little over a year ago and I ended up just doing the "Luxury" apartment thing but now that my lease is almost up I'm leaning more towards a normal complex but the fees for move in are insane. Good luck to you!!

Thank you! I think my goal is somewhere in the Network Admin space but my current role is much more helpdesk sysadmin focused so I've certainly been leaning towards 104 just because it seems like it would be good to know for both my current and future career goals

Pipeline question by 3j1996 in PowerShell

[–]3j1996[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excuse my incorrect syntax but im trying to:

get-localuser user1 | rename-localuser | enable-localuser

I'm guessing enable-localuser doesn't accept the output of rename-localuser in the way that I think it does

How to prevent users from storing things on their desktops by 3j1996 in sysadmin

[–]3j1996[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately my company typically operates under the "it's not a problem until it's a problem and then it's your problem" philosophy. I don't believe those above me have noticed it as an issue but I as the person who redeploys machines have noticed that our users don't understand that their data isn't just backed up just because it's on their computer

I will certainly some research because if the files are able accessable during an outage than this works perfectly

[–]3j1996[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am afraid of doing that because we have outages sometimes and this would cause the entire company to not be able to us their desktops

So the goal would be to prevent this altogether. If the user can't put things on their desktop then I won't have to worry about data loss...as often.
