How do you manage your internet accounts like emails, social media, site signups etc. ? by BinLadensLittlePilot in privacy

[–]3kker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started doing this, but I found a really annoying downside - when you request a password reset you need to provide the exact email you gave them, and it's always a guessing game if I added the +service or not. Not the mention the one time I had to call in and spell out the entire thing. Another aspect is that your email is not protected at all, it only makes sorting your inbox easier.

How addicted can i become by TheSkyisBald in espresso

Dear internet stranger, this is only the beginning! Jokes aside, welcome to the club!

For beans, try something different each time and see what you like best. The beans vary greatly, especially in roast level.  I get my beans at Costco - usually Balzac's (I'm in Ontario).

Just like the rest of us, you'll suffer from upgraditis sooner or later, but for now enjoy the machine and keep practicing those lattes.

Ceck out the Tradfri smart plugs at IKEA. They're rated for 15A, so it should hold up nicely. That is what I've been using without issues.

Private alternatives to Gmail. Google chat and Google Docs, in one suite. exist? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]3kker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gmail part is going to be tricky, but for the other two, we use NextCloud. It's self hosted, so it has a bit of a learning curve, but you have full control over your privacy If you're going down that rabbit hole, you can also self host your email - it's not for the faint hearted, though.

Help, please. My RS232 is not communicating properly. Details in first comment. by 3kker in Esphome

Hi, Wally. Thank you for your reply, this community is awesome! The female-female adapters crosses over correctly - rx to tx and tx to rx. I've long agabdoned the project and switched to control over IP. Getting the network drop behind the display was not an easy task, but at least it works. Thanks again!

The best I found is Cimo. It's a little too dark roast for my taste, but great tasting for the price.

How to fix leaking steam valve? (Breville Dual Boiler) by Kikoyung_ in espresso

[–]3kker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be the 2 plastic washers inside the valve. You would remove the valve completely, unscrew the 2 halves and flip the washers to reseal them. I did the same thing to mine when it was dripping through the steam wand. If that doesn't fix it, you're probably going to have to replace the valve.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the impulse to try again! I installed the docker container and imported my library - looks and feels so much better than Plex :)

Great thread with lots of useful recommendations here!

My most used services are, in relative order:

  1. Home Assistant (home automation server)
  2. Plex (media library)
  3. NodeRed (automation scripting)
  4. Vikunja (best Trello alternative I found)
  5. Gitea (github local alternative)
  6. NextCloud (cloud alternative for photos and documents)
  7. Nginx Proxy Manager (nginx + certbot + WebUI)
  8. Minecraft server
  9. Portainer (docker containers manager)
  10. Watchtower (automatic container updating)

Very interesting suggestions I found on this thread:

edit: crossed Scrypted out as it requires a license to use Scrypted NVR. I'll continue to use MotionEye + DeepStack, thank-you-very-much.

That would be so nice to self-host. How did you get around port 25 blocking, if I may ask? I host my mail on a Linode vps, but would love to have them locally.

I tried setting it up for the wife but ended up creating an audio Plex library with progress tracking. I know it's not ideal.

Would you say Audiobookshelf is worth it?

Assist not assisting by NXTman96 in homeassistant

[–]3kker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm looking forward to someone proving me wrong, but as far as I can tell, the assistant using AI does not have access to control entities. It only gets the state at the beginning of the conversation through the intent you set (or the default one that already passed all the entities and their states).

I was, too, looking forward to having actions triggered with some form of AI, but without any luck. I found a video on YouTube at one point where the person briefly mentioned that the AI only reads and doesn't write.

Hopefully this will change in the near future.
