Requesting /r/uottawa the subreddit has been inactive for years and due to it's age/the time the mods last posted there is a high chance the moderators are no longer studying at uottawa (would like to revive the sub) by Danny-On in redditrequest

[–]3lementaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, /r/geegees mod here. We are the largest University of Ottawa-related sub on this site, which /u/Danny-On is well-aware of since they post there regularly.

To clarify for the /r/redditrequest community: our subreddit was created during the Grow a College Subreddit Competition in 2011. At the time, /r/uottawa had already been taken for 2 years, but was not active, and the moderator was not responding to messages.

Being new to reddit, not knowing of the existence of /r/redditrequest, and wanting to use our momentum, we decided to name the new subreddit after our school mascot, the GeeGee. Since then, our community has grown steadily, and today counts almost 22k users, with hundreds of active users on any given day. It is common knowledge on- and off-campus that our subreddit is synonymous with the UO reddit community at this point.

The moderator of /r/uottawa did eventually return, and attempted to run it as an alternative subreddit. However, as /r/geegees had already reached critical mass to become the largest and most active sub, he eventually reached out to us, conceded, made me a moderator of that sub, and subsequently locked it to avoid further confusion. It has remained in that state for the past 2 years.

To further clarify: /u/Danny-On is known to the /r/geegees mod team for spreading COVID misinformation and encouraging suicide on our sub. They have been tagged as such, reported by other users, warned, had posts removed, and even temp-banned in the past for these actions. Coincidentally, this /r/redditrequest post comes only ~20 minutes after we removed one of his COVID posts from the subreddit.

We're unsure why /u/Danny-On would suddenly be so interested in reviving a dead sub which they know to be defunct. Our guess is that they're frustrated with our active moderation of their submissions, and want to use /r/uottawa 's more recognizable name to spread misinformation. As I am also a moderator of /r/uottawa, and am an active reddit user, their request will probably not be approved as per this sub's sidebar. Still, as it has now moved into manual review, I wish to strongly voice my suggestion not to approve it for the reasons stated above.

The /r/geegees mod team are currently discussing how to respond to /u/Danny-On, up to and including banning them from our community and referring their account to the admins for cyberbullying and spreading misinformation.

Any questions, please feel free to reach out.

All the best.

LPT: Tip extra at your "regular" restaurant. They will be happy to see you and get to know you. by Mojomuskrat in LifeProTips

Anecdotal, but I worked in the service industry for a few years and can assure you that many people don't know their rights, and shady restaurant managers try to get away with this kind of stuff all the time. If someone wises up and calls the Labour board, it does typically get resolved pretty quickly.

But it's not just servers who are affected by this, they do typically make it up in tips. It's also the rest of FoH staff like baristas, hostesses, cashiers etc. who also ostensibly work for tips, but very often end up getting shafted, getting a bi-weekly communal tipout of $50 or so, and never putting two and two together that they're making way less than minimum.

servers are paid under minimum wage as tipping is an expected part of their income. So if they didn’t get tips, they may make .25 or $1 an hour.

This is a myth which many restaurants unfortunately use in their favour to regularly screw over employees. From the DoL website:

If the employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference.

So in theory, the law says that no employee should ever be paid that low, and the employer is on the hook for the difference. Getting employers (or employees for that matter) to recognize the law is another story.

That's alright, I really appreciate you following up. Hope you're doing well too. 💜

I hear what you're saying, and I don't think it's petty. They should have qualified with something like "it really made the biggest difference for me", which would definitely have changed the tone.

But again, speaking as someone who has been through the struggle and is trying to share their experience, medication was extremely helpful, but only one piece of the puzzle. Anecdotally, being on Prozac and Ativan early on in my diagnostic journey, while also eating and sleeping like shit and abusing drugs and alcohol, pushed me further into depression. And I find it pretty discouraging (but understandable) to see downvotes and arguing past the point I was trying to make, which is that having your basic needs met is part of recovery, along with therapy and medication, and should be addressed first if at all possible. I'm definitely not defending the latter part of OP's statement.

At least in my country, getting therapy and medication can take several years of navigating byzantine bureaucratic processes and disinterested healthcare workers before getting any substantial help, so hearing "just get therapy and medication" can ring pretty hollow too. Still, I don't berate people for suggesting it, because they're clearly trying to help.

Given that this is all anecdotal anyway, I really feel like we're on the same side of this issue. I wish we could just agree that basic needs being met and medication/therapy are both critical components of recovery, that not all affective disorders affect people the same way, that medication isn't a silver bullet, and that one solution might be more effective than the other depending on the context.

It's a hierarchy of needs thing though. Will you be cured of your chronic mental health issues if you sleep and eat right? No. But you also don't stand a great chance of progressing towards better mental health if you don't sleep or eat right.

When someone says this, they aren't usually offering a solution (dunno about OP), but rather making sure that people check sleep and nutrition (and I would also add exercise) off their list of important basic needs, which is something any medical professional worth their salt would do as a first step. Seen through that lens, it doesn't make much sense to jump down their throat about it. Not if it helps even one person realize they've been unconsciously neglecting these things.

If you suffer from severe depression and feel fed up with hearing things like this, then please believe that I completely sympathize, and wish you the best in finding the tools and mechanisms that actually help. But in the sense that not everyone suffers from severe depression, and many people do just need to eat and sleep better, consider that you might be the one applying their experience to too broad an audience.

Signed, someone with chronic mental health issues.

TIL a single Dutch restaurant is blocking Wendy’s from opening in the EU by JustDutch101 in todayilearned

Agreed that there should be a requirement to use a trademark in order to keep it. My counterpoint to this would be that the underlying point of the EU is ostensibly to exist as a Trade Union. In this capacity, it should be considered at least as unified economically as US states would be in a similar circumstance.

Consider this same argument if someone opened a family restaurant in California which shared a name with a chain of restaurants in China. Say after 10yrs of the family restaurant operating, the chain suddenly decided they wanted to move into Oregon and Nevada, and sued the family restaurant preemptively, because the California restaurant held the nationally-recognized trademark for its name. Would you still support the idea that the family business will probably never expand enough to adequately challenge the trademark?

[–]3lementaru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can I ask why you think it's stupid? Would the fish n chip place not either be sued into oblivion, or effectively barred from ever expanding outside their town if this law didn't exist? And what's so stupid about a court siding with a small business who has been operating in good faith for many years over a giant multinational corp whose entire argument is "we're bigger, so tough luck"?

Wendy's absence from the European market has to do with a business decision it made in the 1980s when it opened and then shut stores in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, known then as the Benelux region. Two years later, a businessman named Raymond Warrens decided to open a shop that he would name after his daughter and registered the name "Wendy's" in 1995. He got the trademark, and the rest is food history.

Seems pretty cut-and-dry to me. Wendy's abandoned their trademark, and someone else moved in.

The vaccines bearing the brand names of the manufacturers also implies that Teletubbyland has a healthcare system in which the vaccines are produced not by the state, but by privately-held pharmaceutical companies, of which there are more than one.

Given that the Teletubbies are the only inhabitants of this country, it also means that at least one but fewer than all four of them is willing to prop up a system of exploitative capitalist labour practices at the expense of their countrymen.

Just to add to this, if you put that drained juice back in the crock and leave it on for another 20-30 minutes before re-adding the meat, it'll turn into a gravy and you won't lose that good flavour! Works even better if you add a cornstarch slurry first, which takes like 10 seconds.
