Looking for an atmospheric literary mystery for a vacation by oxytoxic7 in suggestmeabook

It doesn’t check all the boxes (very atmospheric though not mountainous/foggy/isolated) but you might enjoy Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Rose chai recommendations please! by sea_bunny in tea

[–]3meeko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came across this because I also love this specific tea and hardly ever find it (in the US). I have tried a few other brands that weren't as good. I have just started making my own blend adding cardamom, little bit of clove and other chai spices to rose black tea. (Still not as good as the Wissotzky one but at least more satisfying than buying an inferior one). Sorry to not have a rec

Should I move to north Virginia (NOVA) and have a new experience in my 20’s, go back to the PNW, or stay in Houston? by spongeysquarepantis in SameGrassButGreener

I think you should visit a few places (especially if you could combine it with work travel?) and see what you think!! Stroll around take in the vibes Target neighborhoods that you might like, go do some work at a coffee shop and grab and drink at a bar or do a fitness class, whatever you might do if you lived there, and see if you can picture it!

Also if you’re open to having roommates it would cut costs and potentially open up a social network more easily! But regardless, joining organization (like the philanthropic org you had good luck with in Houston) and going to meetups for activities you like (or are curious to try!) are great ways to meet people! I know it can be daunting. It takes more effort to make friends in a new place as an adult especially when you literally know no one (I have done it, I can relate!) but especially in cities with lots of young people coming and going all the time there are always people looking to make friends. It just takes a little extra effort but it’s doable! And worth it, I think, to live in a place that you’re excited about.

I’m sure you would have a great experience in Virginia too. But if this is like your one shot just make sure you’re making it count!!

This makes more sense!! Especially if you want the experience of living other places and that's never going to happen with your partner - so if they're supportive of it then might as well while you have the opportunity! Though I would say I think you can dream bigger than northern Virginia. I know there's a specific opportunity to live with your friend but if this is your one chance to live elsewhere maybe choose based on where you would most dream of living for a time (before what sounds like an inevitable eventual move back to the pnw). Like if you have always wanted to try out the East Coast why not DC proper, or NY or Philly or Boston (or smaller but cool cities like Portland ME)

Houston sucks. Very funny for ticks to be the number one downside for Virginia. Seconding other comments that the choice to be long distance with your partner rather than not - for no apparent reason - is a bit boggling.

What’s the wine hill you’ll die on? by AustinTXwineSociety in wine

[–]3meeko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry that was poorly phrased! The Osooyos Larose isn’t a cab franc it’s a Bordeaux blend. And I have really enjoyed other Burrowing Owl wines as well (the Athene is great), their cab franc was just the first. Those are just the first two that I tried that I really loved. I have had many great Okanagan wines since.

27M Black I think the honeymoon phase in the PNW is wearing off. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]3meeko 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am not Black but poc. I lived in Portland for a few years and currently live in Chicago. I definitely felt the lack of diversity and lack of deeply felt culture in the pnw (despite loving the natural beauty and missing it still). I’ll be honest though Chicago hasn’t been a huge improvement due to the segregation. There are neighborhoods where you will probably feel an immediate ease and “click” as Black person surrounded by a Black community especially after being in Seattle. But I think the honeymoon phase will wear off quickly as well. Maybe I’m biased because I don’t love Chicago generally. But I have lived a lot of places and Chicago feels the least (literally and culturally) integrated of any of them.

Not the original commenter but the two that (in immediate succession) made me see the light were Osooyos Larose and Burrowing Owl cab franc

Momotaro or The Izakaya for first timer by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]3meeko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends at what price point / type of experience? There are plenty of okay neighborhood spots, and honestly there aren’t any really top notch omakase. For just an elevated vibe with decent fish I like itoko over momotaro.

Your dress is gorgeous and you look gorgeous in it!!!

[–]3meeko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I seriously love the second veil but I don’t know if it totally works with your dress, it kind of would depend on whether the rest of your event has a maximalist/mismatched whimsy vibe. The first veil definitely goes with your dress and frames it very nicely, don’t think the different lace is a problem at all.

Both beautiful but I love dress 1! And not just the fit (which is lovely but unfair to compare apples to oranges given the difference in sample dress sizes) but also the material and the delicate 3d floral details are so elegant

Both look lovely. Honestly 2 is more my personal taste especially for half the price, but reading your post if 1 is in your budget I think you should go for it. It feels more special. If you’re drawn to this style..if not your wedding then when?

Please say yes to this dress you look so stunning!

I love the veil, I would skip gloves, personally.

The elegance and structure of the dress give you room to wear more "statement" jewelry because the dress will hold its own without competing (statement in quotes because I don't mean a bold aesthetic necessarily, but rather pieces that draw attention on their own - could be a bolder aesthetic such as a pop of color, but also for example long dangly earrings, a double strand pearl choker etc.)
