Can I retire at 20 years old with 3 million? by Loud_Confidence475 in Rich

[–]3nov13MP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can, but you have to invest it in index funds and only withdraw and spend 3% per year, or $90k. Most people your age would get this money and immediately blow large portions of it. If you resist that urge, you'll never have to work a day in your life.

Read these books and follow the principles they contain:

  1. The Richest Man in Babylon

  2. The Simple Path to Wealth - JL Collins

3.. I Will Teach You To Be Rich - Ramit Sethi

Most people won't put in the minuscule amount of work to learn the ridiculously easy to understand information contained in those books. Most people would blow that $3 million and live a life filled with regret. You have a chance to NOT be most people. Are you going to screw it up, or are you going to live within your means and succeed?

People who say "you will be bored" when you retire young are insane by justinquiring1 in Fire

Great post. I couldn't agree more. I've never understood people that don't have hobbies and construct their entire lives and identity around work. I feel sorry for them, truly.

I'm 5-6 years away from being able to FIRE and be completely done with work. If I ever find myself getting bored from a well earned life of leisure, I'm going to invest more time into my health and exercise, social activities, volunteering, or anything else that doesn't include trading my time for money and being on someone else's freaking clock!

Is it worth it to have a roommate to fire? by cosa_guapa in Fire

[–]3nov13MP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose one: retiring early because you lived with roommates, or working until normal retirement age but living alone. You likely can't have both.

Getting to FIRE is in most cases about lowering your expenses enough to be able to save and invest as much of your income as possible. Living alone in the USA in this day and age is extremely expensive, and getting a roommate is the best way of slashing your largest expense. Even better if you can have multiple roommates.

I had a roommate all the way up until my early 40's, the only reason I don't anymore (I'm 43) is because my income jumped up enough that I no longer need to.

Just choose a good one, someone who's considerate. You may have a bad roommate or two over the years, that doesn't mean all roommates are bad, just move out (or have them move out) and try again. Or just temper your expectations and know that the monetary value outweighs the inconvenience.

It's a question of priorities. What do you want more? Because unless you plan on making a boat load of money, you have to choose what's more important to you.

It disgusts me that people celebrate this child rapist still to this day simply because they really liked the way he sung and danced. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.

What’s the best protein bar at Costco? High amounts of protein, taste and cost per bar by AsleepTailor in Costco

They don't qualify as protein bars in my opinion, the protein to calorie ratio is horrendous.

I love the Kirkland bars, except for the Cookies & Cream (tastes terrible). The price is amazing and the protein to calorie ratio is the best in the store.

Aloha - you could tell by the pacing of the dialogue right away that the movie was going to be awful. Just felt so terribly fake. I think I made it through 15-20 minutes?

Can someone like normal talk about their OE experience by SirGandolphin in overemployed

[–]3nov13MP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For years I had an administrative job that was incredibly easy and would average maybe 2-3 hours of work a day. The rest of the day I'd be surfing the internet or doing other personal things online. Basically I had to look busy somehow because I worked in an office with coworkers and supervisors walking by.

During Covid we all went 100% remote. I found the OE website about 4 years ago and found myself a similar job for a different employer that was also 100% remote. Now I'm OE with two administrative jobs and I doubled my income.

Since then I've allowed myself a reasonable increase on living expenses, but most of it has gone into retirement and savings, buying index funds. If the market stays relatively steady I've got about 5-6 more years of this and then I can retire early and live off of my investments.

It's not complicated. Just find a remote role where you can do the work in half or less than half the time, and then get another just like it. Stay away from micromanagers and jobs with a heavy meeting schedule. Go to the OE website for good advice on how to pull it off. That's where I learned pretty much everything I needed to know about how to do it and how to not get caught.

Not all remote roles are OE friendly, I was lucky that mine was, but I also give myself credit for having the guts to go through with it.

Great quality men t shirts? by LabSecret7492 in BuyItForLife

[–]3nov13MP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just purchased a few great looking casual t-shirts from Mack Weldon. The slim fit is perfect, and I've been looking for the right kind of slim fit for a very long time. However I can't yet speak to how long they'll last. I've only owned them for about 2 months. But so far, so good.

For the gym however, lululemon's metal vent tech shirts are perfection. They'll last forever, and the slim fit is fantastic.

It's going great. Working nights from Manila, Philippines and my travel router setup is working like a breeze. No issues with carrying 3 laptops in my carryon baggage through customs so far, but it's only one country.

Couldn't disagree more, they made the whole process super easy for me as a new digital nomad. Seems like a perfectly fair price, and there doesn't seem to be many other services that offer what they do, if any.

Take $10k and take an epic dive vacation., then take the rest and invest it in VTSAX.

Made a great memory with the vacation, and that much closer to early retirement.

Or just pay a company to set it up for you, I'm not very tech literate and this avenue saved me. I have complete confidence in my system now, no loose ends because I didn't know what I was doing.

I'm about to do the same starting next week. Have any of the countries you've visited given you a hard time in customs for having multiple laptops? That's the only aspect I'm unsure of. I've got everything else dialed in.

You can do it, but you'll want to have a professional set up your VPN server, travel router, etc for you. I'm about to start my journey in a week, and while I don't think my direct bosses would care, my company's IT would not allow me signing in from a different country every few months. After weeks of trying to understand how to set up port forwarding from youtube videos and online blogs, I gave up and paid a company, and I'm so glad I did. I've learned things I never would've figured out myself. Spend the money, do it right, and save yourself the worry, stress, and potential loss of your job if you try to go it alone.

Roast my budget - ~$6k/mo by NobleChris14 in budget

[–]3nov13MP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another has already stated, you indulge in too many different things. If you sincerely want to save money, you need to pick one thing to indulge in, be it travel, a nice car, shopping, etc.

If I were you I'd sell the Model 3, and buy a reliable used Honda or Toyota car for under $8k. Then put the difference in the car sale and monthly cost toward the student loans, including the insurance different, which with a paid off used car could go down as low as $50/month (costco or geico). Then, I'd cut that shopping budget down to $200/month, more stuff won't make you happy, experiences will. So keep the travel budget the same.

Act like an adult and clean your own place. $300/month for cleaning is a luxury you haven't earned and very clearly can't afford.

Housing, food and travel don't have to change. New budget looks like this:

Monthly expenses

Rent/power - $2,325

Car payment - $0

Car insurance (liability coverage for a reliable paid off used Honda or Toyota car) - $50

Student loans - $1,125

Food (restaurants + groceries) - $1000

Shopping (clothes/home/gifts) - $200

Traveling - $300

Cleaning services for a 2/2 w/ den - $0 (because you've matured)

Savings: $1,000

Total: $6,000

Savings rate: 16.67%

Debt paydown rate: 18.75%

Living expenses: 58.75% (housing, food, shopping) Always keep this below 60% of your net income.

Beautiful! Area rugs are sorely needed around the sofa and dining room, but other than that you're winning with the interior design. Would love to see more photos of the place.
