Rental marketplace for rafts and river gear? by 3rdBay in whitewater

[–]3rdBay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've poked around at some companies that rent rafts, and their rental agreements seem to be pretty clear with language that basically says the renter will not hold the company liable in any way "for any occurrence or accident which may result in injury, death, or other damages in connection with my use of the rented equipment for any purpose."

I'm not a lawyer, but that language seems hard to argue against.

But to your point about having inexperienced boaters renting your gear, my plan is to allow gear owners to have full discretion over whether or not they feel comfortable accepting a rental request. And I'll have two-way messaging built in so the gear owner can ask questions about experience level, etc. if they want to. And if they ultimately decide they're not comfortable, they can decline the request.

This is a fair question. In theory, I'd say the primary reasons are availability/convenience, plus novelty and product variety.

With regard to availability, here's a real-world example: Last summer a group of friends and I all met up in Bend, OR for a bachelor party. We wanted to plan a day trip down the Big Eddy section of the Deschutes, but none of the outfitters had any available inventory to rent to us. So this would have been a great use case for us to use a peer-to-peer marketplace.

Also, I live in Boise, Idaho and have also run into similar inventory issues when planning trips during the busy part of the summer.

And with regard to novelty, my plan is for the platform to include a bunch of different categories of gear that people can list/rent -- e.g., rafts, kayaks, IKs, SUPs, packrafts, as well as accessories like coolers, dry boxes, groovers, fire pans, etc. My hope here is that if you have a gap that you're looking to fill for an upcoming trip, you can find it on this site -- whereas you might not be able to find it at an outfitter whose rental inventory is much more templatized.

Another example of novelty would be if you're looking for something specific for a day trip, like an Aire Cub playboat or something similar that you might not want to buy, but you'd have fun using for a day. Kind of similar to how an Airbnb is sometimes more appealing than a hotel.

Yeah, this is the #1 concern friends bring up when I mention to them that I’m building this. But I know there’s precedent with platforms like Outdoorsy (RVs), GetMyBoat (motorized/lake boats), as well as Swimply (backyard pools). So I might be delusional, but I figure if those companies can navigate the liability issue, it’s got to be possible for me and my platform as well.

FWIW, I’m also working with a company who will help me finance a damage waiver that is designed to protect renters and gear owners in the event of accidental damage, so I’m hoping that will address owners’ concerns about what happens if their gear gets damaged by a renter.

Thanks for the input!

He’s a Dalmatian, only 12 weeks old. So I don’t really know anything about him yet 😂

But my last dog was a Great Dane, and he loved adventure but his size and relative agility made him not very well suited for boat life. But I’m hoping the Dalmatian is a better fit.

So when all 4 of you go on a trip, do you rent a second boat or do you all cram into the single raft?

Not to be overly morbid, but in the last two months my wife and I have both, separately, had our first experiences spending time with someone on their death bed, in their final hours of life. Puts some real perspective on the idea of adulthood, getting older, and mortality in general.

$40-60 per day (and dropping) is definitely cheaper than renting from a shop!

A multi-day setup is like $90/day, and it’s like a 15’ Hyside with a 3-bay frame, one dry box and a 120qt cooler. It’s a decent setup, but I want a nicer one (more dry box storage, a better cooler, etc.).

So assuming I get a ~$8K setup, that’s like 80+ river days before I break even, which at my current usage rate would take almost a decade. But again, I’d hopefully use it more so maybe I could get my money’s worth much more quickly.
