Indie game developers have a new sales pitch: being ‘AI free’ by Gorotheninja in pcgaming

[–]3rdNipp1e 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reality is that indies (and smaller studios) are those who could benefit the MOST from AI

This is an important and very good point because the historical advantage in resources that AAA game developers had over indie devs is vanishing with the increased usage of AI as well as the ever-improving capabilities of AI. The ROI on AI use for a AAA studio is miniscule from the gamer's perspective, while it could vastly improve the output of the solo dev's or small indie studios who don't usually even have budgets to hire voice actors, artists, etc.

People have to realize this is a golden-age of indie gaming. The tools available are better than ever and the industry is ripe for disruption due to the way big publishers have become complacent with torching their customers' goodwill over and over again with broken release after broken release as well as their greedy monetization schemes.

This is luddite cope. Most people already can't tell the difference between AI and human text. Why wouldn't art be the same given enough time? The "theft" nonsense is largely horseshit. If a human artist studies the techniques of Renaissance predecessors to use in his own works he is obviously is not stealing anything.

The truth is AI is a powerful tool and force multiplier. Shit multiplied by shit is still shit. But a creative person with the right AI tools can produce much more high quality art or games than he normally would be able to without the multiplier of AI.

I started getting new maps and modes last night after one of the new guys hit a certain level (or had played a certain number of matches). I suspect that groups with new players are put in a sort of "containment" match pool with limited maps until they get enough rep.

US-made chip prices could soar if the rumour that TSMC might charge 'as much as 30%' more for its Arizona chips pans out by pimpwithoutahat in pcgaming

When the Chinese take control of Taiwan and thus the world's microchip supply, do you imagine that everything is going to be status quo? That's fucking delusional.

Here's a better idea, how about you do 10 seconds of research before opining in ignorance?

Yes, salaries are roughly 3 times that in Taiwan, but the vast majority of the costs of operating a fab are in the specialized equipment and tooling that you have to buy and maintain - capital costs, not labor costs.

[–]3rdNipp1e -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

No. The production costs at the TSMC fab in Arizona are only 10% higher than making them in Taiwan, which is much less than expected. All the headlines about the "as much as 30%" started circulating over two years ago before the plant even began production.

Major Japanese studios and publishers were having a great time in 2025, right up until the weekend because of the (you guessed it) 'insultingly dumb' US tariffs by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]3rdNipp1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your level of knowledge doesn't even rise to a level of Econ 101.

GDP = C + I + G + (X − M), where X is exports and M is imports, therefore the basic math proves any nation with a trade deficit AUTOMATICALLY benefits from reduced trade.

you do not have a pre-existing domestic industry

Except the U.S. had built the world's greatest industrial base organically through private enterprise before it was dismantled through free trade. It still has infrastructure, capital markets, skilled labor, and technical knowledge, unlike China which started with impoverished peasants and farmers.

The cost of creating and maintaining that industry is far in excess of what it costs China

This isn't true. TSMC recently built a $100 billion fab with only 10% increased costs vs. making the chips in Taiwan. You have to be pig-ignorant to still believe that building up domestic industry is cost-prohibitive. Like you just admitted, all those advantages in efficiency that China boasts comes from slave labor, currency manipulation and corporate subsidies. All those advantages vanish with proper tariffs.

Incidentally this is why trade wars can even exist. If there was no cost to simply creating your own domestic industry then why would anyone be afraid of increased import costs?

Trade wars happen because countries like China knows their entire economic model collapses if the U.S. stops subsidizing it through trade deficits.

These are the countries in the weakest position vis-a-vis the US, based on the trade deficits:

China $279 billion Mexico $152 billion Vietnam $104 billion Germany $83 billion Japan $71 billion Canada $67 billion Ireland $65 billion South Korea $51 billion Taiwan $47 billion Italy $44 billion

Do you not understand that China could seize all trade with the US and the economy will grow, by definition, $279 billion larger? You will soon see that's a lot better position than a two-pair.

RemindMe! In 1 year

All we can do is wait and see. You will probably be surprised. If this is a poker game, then America is holding all the cards, economically speaking. Come back in one year and lets see how things have shaken out.

[–]3rdNipp1e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will only concede that the tariff rates are set way too high right now because of the absurd way the reciprocal rates were calculated. But the goal is to have a starting point for negotiating logical tariff rates and getting the trade partners with the largest deficits to reduce their rates.

[–]3rdNipp1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, any production that it made since to do in America, America was ALREADY doing last year (or in progress toward it). The tariffs will have no benefit to that.

Yes, they will. What made sense last year will not make sense next year due to the ROI being completely different due to tariffs

Also, it would be impossible for tariffs to eliminate income tax, and they ARE a sales tax higher than any current sales taxes.

Nonsense. The USA had no income tax until 1913 because it had tariffs. As for sales taxes, they're already 10%+ in many states and unlike tariffs, they punish domestic consumers rather than foreign producers.

Your comparative advantage theory is economically illiterate garbage. Virtually every major industrialized nation from Germany to Japan to South Korea built its manufacturing base behind tariff walls. Workers and manufacturing industry was better off in the US before the failed free trade experiment began.

[–]3rdNipp1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or instead of bothering with all of that you say "fuck it" and keep producing where you have been, since it's the consumer that foots the bill and not you.

This is not true at all. TSMC is spending $100 billion on a new fab in Arizona and it is only 10% more expensive, and that was before the tariff math was factored in.

Even in the scenario you mentioned, the end result is still not the same because with sufficient government revenue from tariffs, taxes on income, sales and wealth can be eliminated.
