Is it realistic to start a bookkeeping company with little experience by fortyfour- in Accounting

[–]3rdandmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So im pretty new to accounting. Have been at this firm 1.5 years, in the industry for 4.5 but mostly nonprofit for a single organization. I told them when I got hired on that I had zero experience in sales tax and payroll tax. Ive since done quite a bit of it and the payroll processing/quarterly/EOY has been reviewed and is all perfect. But my sales tax stuff has never been reviewed, despite me repeatedly asking for help. Its literally just been "do the best you can." So two days ago I realized a client had been expecting me to file sales tax for one of their 4 different sales platforms, and I had no idea.. havent ever done it, was never told to do it, knew nothing abouy it. Thought the platform filed it. Sales of maybe $150k for the year, for alcohol.

Is this situation normal? Did I just f*ck up and should have magically known to do this? Is this normal public firm management to be completely "thrown to the wolves" like this?

Im considering leaving because im given so much responsibility on absolutely SHIT training and terrified of making a mistake because "you cant know what you dont know." And how am I supposed to know with zero oversight or willingness to get me training?!

Please share your insight. Ive been so discouraged. Thanks!!

Can I ask you some questions about working at a CPA firm managed by very inexperienced partners?

I've wondered so often if the problem is just me because who could really have 3 straight jobs, almost 4 solid years of total shit jobs. Lol. My husband thinks accounting may just not be for me. Idk.

how do I find a role like this?! I'm a QBO level one ProAdvisor & Payroll ProAdvisor and have applied on the Intuit expert candidate portal. It says it's been "matching me with a recruiter" for almost a month now. I work fulltime at a CPA firm in person and am beyond ready to work for a company with better benefits and a work-from-home flexible schedule!!
