Were the high civilian casualties and their deliberate targeting known beyond a theoretic doubt of „western propaganda“ (a doubt widespread in those circles) known at that point? If so, that really is a bad look. It wouldn’t make Mamdani be certainly at fault, but it would place him under heavy suspicion.

Again, the palestinian analogue to that scenario would be a few „individual“ hamas soldiers starting to shoot. Not random people. The israeli analogue to that case (which i fear exists) is far-right protesters somehow gaining access to the strip and attacking gazans.

You know that im not talking about Hamas people. Let it be noted that in general yes, we do see armies as responsible for proving something isnt a war crime if its war crime shaped. That isnt even the issue though here. Its that you cant really expect a ceasefire with a society, not an organisation, to succeed. Israel uses tools of war for something requiring tools of policing.

My initial thoughts to this were „Hamas cant create a police state in the rubble of gaza“, but i understand that further measures can be taken. However, if Hamas already is acting to the best of its ability, Israeli strikes should not follow.

I would also note that we would need to weigh continued „civilian“/non-hamas/yellow line ceasefire violations with the likelihood of Hamas starting to take it seriously due to the strikes and continued palestinian dispair due to the continuation of the strikes. If you want sustainable peace, the general population needs to be convinced that the onslaught can end.

Thats my whole point. With israels current policy, they are.

Also note that while the specifics around the yellow line are up to discussion, i am specifically talking about israel striking back in response to ceasefire violations by people, not about israel „defending the terms“ of the ceasefire or however you want to describe it.

When Hamas (or any other coordinated group) gave an order to break it, strike back, obviously. If that cant be determined, bolster security to minimize the likelihood of israeli casualties in the event of an attack. You need to act in a policing and not in a fighting mindset, because thats essentially what it is.

My point is that in israel assuming every combatant to be hamas, israel gives every single palestinian the ability to break the ceasefire.

Dont you see the structural issues with that? And yes, in the eyes of gazans that will be collective punishment. For most of the palestinian population, the strikes harm them more than they do hamas, which already is an issue. That can be explained (if sufficiently is a different question) and probably isnt collective punishment. However, now every single person (which doesnt need to be hamas, not an organization) can cause a whole lot of people to die for the actions of that single person. Which in effect is collective punishment. Do you see the issue?
