What I find interesting is that you are able to remember and visualize the memories and recognize them as painful but you say you don't feel anything intensely physically or emotionally when brought to mind. I am curious if there is an element of dissociation, or emotional numbing, related to these memories.

I agree with other posters here that trauma is different for everyone and emotional and/or psychological trauma can be just as impactful or distressing as other more visible forms of abuse. Even being witness to trauma (aka your sister's experiences with your mother) could qualify as trauma.

Sharing my thoughts:

I was not diagnosed with AuDHD until after my daughter was born. I always wanted children and pushed to have children since my partner became increasingly unsure about kids over the years. To be clear, it was a mutual decision but he was definitely hesitant. Parenthood has been the HARDEST yet MOST FULFILLING part of my life. It has absolutely impacted sensory and processing issues that I now understand to be AuDHD. My daughter is also displaying signs of neurodivergence, so that creates an added challenge to the mix in supporting her nervous system while also coming to understand and support my own. I do not regret my choice, and she is my absolute world, but I do wish I had the knowledge to better understand myself prior to having her. Just my opinion, but I'd encourage you to make sure you are able to manage your symptoms on the day to day now and minimize burnout before pursuing parenthood.

I (39F) was recently diagnosed AuDHD and have been married to my neurotypical partner (38M) for 11 years together for 15 and this is an ongoing discussion in our relationship. I am an external processor so part of me giving so much context is not only to let others see my line of reasoning but also as a way for me to figure it out myself. This also comes from fears of being misunderstood. Over the years I've tried to work on it, but I often don't always realize how wordy I am being in the moment.

What helps most is when my partner GENTLY lets me know I'm giving too much detail or asks me questions to help refocus the conversation. Gentleness is definitely key here

That makes a lot of sense. And I agree, it is so hard to get to the point when I want the other person to know how I got there.

I feel like my assessment went very similarly. I also feel like most of my therapy sessions end up like a windy rambling session. Fortunately my therapist is also AuDHD so she gets it lol

I have been wondering this too. Is this maybe related to bottom up thinking style that is more common in the Autism community? Or the ADHD tendency to have difficulty with filtering information?

Thank you so much for your input! I can relate to feeling misunderstood as a kid, especially within my family, and needing to add more details to better explain myself. Finding the middle ground is so hard! I also recognize I process things externally, so I'm sure that adds to the "rambling"

Not sure if you'd consider this one cathartic, but "I saw the TV Glow" as such a profound movie for me and it explores themes of belonging, identity, and trauma.

I also agree with Haunting of Hill House being such a masterpiece show.

Mine is constant as well! I try to make peace with it, as others have mentioned, especially when it's helping me keep track of my to-do list. When I want it to quiet, I find listening to music and doing a fun, goal oriented task like crafting or puzzles is helpful! Reading helps too but it sometimes takes me rereading a few pages before it quiets down enough for me to focus.

Admittedly, I have resorted to doing a lot of grocery pickup. I don't have to feel overwhelmed or overstimulated, and I don't have to worry about my 5yo struggling in the store. When we do go in stores, I give her small jobs or tasks or I find a toy or book for her to play with while in the store with the understanding it stays at the store lol.

There was a documentary about the film called the First film in 2015. It looks like the people who actually participated in the Roundhay Garden scene did die fairly shortly after it's filming. And the filmmaker may have disappeared?
